Those are lovely boots, but my chunky calves rising majestically from the tops would look awful.

Mrmagoo, how old are you?
If heeled ankle boots are what suits you best, I'd say that was appropriate footwear. Too much stressing over age and suitability goes on IMO. Life's too short etc!

Mrmagoo - yes I agree it's not so much how old you are but what suits your figure.

fwiw I've got chunky calves but find that biker boots work okay because although my calves are chunky, they kind of go back in at the knee. The bottom half of the boot hides my cankles a treat. So it does depend on the actual shape of your legs rather than whether or not they are skinny - worth an experiment trying things on.

I just got a lovely cord skirt from Laura Ashley. It's a brilliant fit and just the right length - (slightly above knee) for wearing with thick tights and boots. My only critism is the colour - a quite bright purple. Very nice, but hard to match up tops.

I have the Boden cord skirt (cliche I know but they do a long length that I need) in navy, and their 'relaxed casual skirt' in purple, which is kind of needlecord. I prefer skirts/dresses to jeans too, but always end up wearing them with knee high boots which I know is a little old school but I can't find any ankle boots.

Good suggestions for skirts and boots - but I still feel lacking in inspiration on tops suitable for wearing with skirts 1

I have the Gap one, it would suit boyish figures better, it's quite shortn and narrow on the hips. I really like and think it looks quite stylish.

Have a look at the Gap knitwear section - there are lots of tops and cardigans on there that I think would look okay with a shortish casual-ish skirt. I prefer the plain or stripy stuff, but that's just me.

My rule would be no longer than top of hips for wearing with a flared skirt, but with a straight skirt you could wear longer tops, especially cardigans:
