Questions on oil cleansing method

Hi!

After reading a few threads in here I really want to try this method, it makes a lot of sense when you read it. I have a few questions though:

  1. Do you need castor/sunflower oil necessarily? I have an oil blend my MIL gave me a few years ago which contains sweet almond oil with wheatgerm, jojoba, evening primrose and avocado oil (pure oils only). Can I use this instead? Also, does the fact this bottle was open years ago matter? It's always been kept out of the sunlight, heat and cold.
  1. How often do you cleanse your face with this method? Daily is too much I guess?
  1. What mosturizer do you use in the mornings, do you just use more of your oil blend or do you use a commercial (or home made) product?
  1. Most importantly, does it really work? I mean, can you tell the difference from before you used this method and now?

Any other tips would be welcome!

Hi Mosaica. Will be watching for these answers closely! I started doing this about six Recently didn't do it for 10 days, and my skin was dying. Looks lovely and fresh again now.
Hope someone can answer those questions as I wanted to ask them too.

juneybean · 09/12/2010 13:34

I too will be watching for answers but I think you can do it nightly but in a morning just wash with water and a cloth.

I could tell a difference in terms of my pores and my nose but my cheeks became very dry and papery. I was using olive oil though and no castor oil.

Any more tips?

hi there, I've been using OCM for about 18 months, through pregnancy, breastfeeding and all of the attendant hormonal changes. Definitely noticed improvement in skin and of course, spend far less on skincare than I used to.

  1. I'd start from scratch on the oils, not use an old bottle.

2, I do it every 2days

  1. Moisturiser varies, sometimes I use an oil blend from the health food shop (german brand, will check if you're interested) but generally Kiehl's inthe a.m with SPF and Neal's Yard Wild Rose every few nights (it's very rich)

other tips

USe a scrub once a week or so as the oil can build up and form a barrier on your skin, so needs to be sloughed away
Change your face cloth every time you wash your face

ricketyrock · 10/12/2010 11:46

CAke, what do you do when you don't use the oil cleanse to clean your face? On the days off.

detoxdiva · 10/12/2010 11:59

Hi...I've been doing the OCM for 2 months now since reading about it on here, and I've seen a massive improvement in my acne prone skin. I am not free of spots completely, but the breakouts are much less frequent, and when I do get a breakout, it's usually just 1 or 2 spots which are much easier to manage!

I would use new oils and a new bottle so it's all clean and sterile. I use a 75%/25% mix of sunflower oil and castor oil.

I do the OCM every evening and use a hot flannel to remove the oil. I don't apply moisturiser in the evening as I don't need it, and just apply a small amount of Simple moisturiser in the morning before make up after my shower.

ilovemyfestivehens · 10/12/2010 12:05

I just use plain castor oil and my skin has improved 100% and feels so soft and clean. I'll never use anything else again! Even my early wrinkles appear to be improved.

I did try mixing the castor oil with virgin olive oil, but that just made my skin dry. Castor appears to be the best.

ilovemyfestivehens · 10/12/2010 12:06

I also use this method each day to remove my makeup. It's been fine and doesn't feel like that's too frequent.

GetOrfMoiLand · 10/12/2010 12:10

I use waitrose baby bottom butter instead of oil, it's brilliant. Less faff and mess.

I do this every day in the morning and my skin is very good.

juneybean · 11/12/2010 11:52

Ooo I thought it was the castor oil that dries, is that not correct?

APixieInMyTea · 11/12/2010 13:33

getorf do you mean that you do the ocm but with the butter instead of the oil? So you still do the whole steaming hot facecloth etc.

I bought the waitrose bottom butter and used it as a moisteriser but it made my skin really shiny and greasy. :(. I love it though so might try doin the ocm with it instead of oil?

ilovemyfestivehens · 11/12/2010 23:29

No, the castor oil hasn't dried my skin, but the olive oil was terrible. I still use moisturiser after I've done the cleanse, but the dryness has gone from around my nose and mouth.

The castor oil also softened the dry skin on my hands.

I use castor oil and sunflower oil. Have done oil cleansing and putting olive oil on body in the shower for years.

I do it every evening.

I apply either mosqueta, argan or rosehip oil (whichever bathroom I'm in) afterwards.

Also has helped my cuticles and hands in this nasty weather (sadly used to live in the tropics and dry skin was a distant memory, boo hoo)

I also apply an oil (jojoba or olive) before showering, using it for shaving in the shower. Then when my skin's really dry I apply an occlusive after that.

Oils are great. Basically all you're getting from a cream and super expensive ones at that is oil whipped up in varying proportions of water. So using oil you get more bang for your buck. The only thing you don't get is the momentary plumping effect of a water-based cream, so it sometimes doesn't feel as satisfying.

I have literally been reading threads and THREADS about this all day and it's driving me barmy! So...what I am going to ask has probably been asked a million times before but I've literally made myself dizzy with a million different answers. Basically, I've been over exfoliating my face for a long time and completely over sensitised my skin. Wanting to get back to basics I've started using the OCM with EVOO. Started off well (about a week ago) but now skin is feeling tight and dry and Im temped to get the scrubby mitts on the face and neck again to combat the feeling (thats what I used to do...eeeks!). I've been doing it and night and morning with a warm muslin cloth to wipe oil off - then a little oil rubbed back in to moisturise. I love the idea of going au naturel but the tight feeling is driving me mad (also looks dry and flaky close up but faraway quite good i think!). Skin was always good til I started messing and scubbing and now I am worried I've permanently buggered it up and it will be damaged forever :(. Whilst we're here I wouldnt mind reviews for the OCM method and Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter if anyone has any?? Thanks so much!

Hi

I tired this a while ago, my skin was bad at the time, I used it and for the first few days my skin looked better, after that it got really spotty :(

but loads of other had great results with it, so hopeit goes well for you...

MissFoodie · 06/04/2011 17:20

I use coconut oil every night, takes everything off - alternatively can recommend oil based balms that melt? I also use Jojoba for eye make up

I would never use castor oil....would def clog pores....

Try Sweet Almond or Jojoba if you're unsure

for more cleansers can recommend www.yumetc.blogspot.com

thomasbodley · 06/04/2011 17:58

Instead of using hot flannels or muslins to wipe off, I recommend using a microfibre cloth (eg e-cloth, the kind you use for cleaning worktops; use a clean one each time) with OCM.

I got the tip off Makeupalley.com and it's been a revelation. My skin is completely free of flakies and zits and SO smooth under make up.
