Any tips on getting socks to stay on an 11 m.o?

He doesn't (usually) pull them off - they fall off when he's crawling / pulling up etc. Our house is cold and our kitchen floor especially is freezing.

Is there a particular type which stays on better than others, or are the sock-on things any good?

Tights. With trousers over. He never gets them off himself.

5GoldenFimbos · 08/12/2010 16:11

Second tights

hillyhilly · 08/12/2010 16:11

I second tights - especially in this weather

brimfull · 08/12/2010 16:12

I always found gap ones to be the best for staying on.

izzybiz · 08/12/2010 16:13

Another for tights!

cuddlysmurf · 08/12/2010 16:30

My DS spent all of last winter crawling around with tights under his trousers, and when the floor was freezing, 2 pairs ;)

ProcrastinationEatsTime · 08/12/2010 16:31

Tights.

Those sock-on things do work (to a certain extent) but tights are much better.

I do have some Gap socks, and they're better than the alternatives but still not that great.

I suspect DH will be a bit Hmm about tights but I'll look out for some. I got enough stick from my NCT group for DS wearing legwarmers (camoflague ones, so hardly girly)!

Any recommendations for tights? Can you get any with non-slip bits on the feet?

And aren't tights a pain when changing nappies?

We do EC so I can forsee that being a problem. DS has a lot of time nappy free, mainly wearing split crotch trousers in this weather.

Maybe the sock-ons are worth a try.

A friend of mine always put a babygrow under her DCs trousers/dresses, avoided the need for tights or socks and easier for nappies.

Mine were too old before she had that brainwave. I always found Lidl kids socks to be better quality than anywhere else and stay on brilliantly. Bet you weren't expecting that Smile

Tights, with socks over the top. Or 2 pairs of socks. Gap socks stay on a bit better I think. Generally the ones with the sticky writing on the bottom seem to stay on better. Or those legging things, babylegs?

MerryMarigold · 09/12/2010 20:32

babylegs. Put on over the socks, hold them up a bit? (Not tried it myself though)

Habbibu · 09/12/2010 20:35

If tights no good, these are good. ds has been wearing tights all the time, though - dd's old white ones, and is much cosier.

GetTheXmasPartyStarted · 09/12/2010 20:37

Tights. Or Gap socks seem to be impossible to remove, esp if too big :)

Partyof52010 · 09/12/2010 20:38

Tights. Deffo. I got boy ones in lidl and also my sister gave me some boy gap ones from a few years back. Having already had a dd the changing isn't so much of a chore to me!

KarenHL · 09/12/2010 20:42

We found Gap socks good (usually 3prs for £5). However, when out & about with our little fidget, I used small safety pins to attach her socks to whatever she was wearing.

Often used tights with trousers to ensure she was warm enough (still do on v.cold days). TBH unless you tell people, they probably won't notice if your DS is wearing tights, just think he's wearing v.long socks.

Lucelulu · 09/12/2010 21:06

Moccasins from green baby - either over socks or the ones with integral socks - fantastic for our 1 year old now he's walking on cold floors all the time

AngelDog · 09/12/2010 21:49

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think the problem with his Gap socks must be the size - he's in the 6-12 month size but he's 11 months and 99th centile for height/weight and everyone comments how big his feet are.

I like the safety pins idea too!

We do have some babylegs which he wears under trousers when it's particularly cold.

And adult sized long socks with the feet cut out make good (cheap) legwarmers too. Wink

Tights definitely seem to be the most popular!

Actually, I just remembered that we have a few pairs which came with some other clothes via Freecycle - I'll dig them out tomorrow. :)
