Bit of background, I'm early 40s, 5'7, size 16/18 top and 14 bottoms. Was thinking of wearing long black suede low-heeled boots. Any opinions/advice much appreciated. Thanks. black dress

Well, I finally splashed out on this dress. I have never spent so much on one item of clothing in my life! And I still have to get shoes. But the dress is so flattering - honestly it looks fab and knocks about a stone off me. I think it will be the sort of thing I can keep for a long time and wear for lots of occasions so hopefully a good investment.

Any advice on cheap shoes to go with it much appreciated Grin

Oh wow that ruching looks very flattering and the dress looks quite versatile for dressing up or down.

I do find now that it is worth paying a little bit more to get decent tailoring, because decent materials and lining sit much better than less expensive garments and also last longer.

Fingers crossed that the darned snow stops long enough for my Mint Velvet dress to arrive for Friday before hubby and I go away and yes I am blaming you Go as I had absolutely no intention of buying a new dress until I went on this thread !

Sorry rookie! The Mint Velvet dress is lovely - I think I saw it in H of F today. I have lost almost a stone since Sept and am hoping to lose another before Easter, so maybe next Christmas I can look for dresses that don't just have to cover up lard a little bit of flesh. Have a great weekend!

Clure I haven't worn anything higher than 1/2 inch heels for about 15 years, so I think the skycrapers might be a bit much for me! The Dotty P kitten heels look more like the sort of thing I was thinking. I like things to be quite plain so that I can accessorize a bit. Thanks for all the ideas though.

PS What do you wear on your legs if wearing peep-toe sandals?

Go I saw your dress in John Lewises on Sat very nice.

Just an update for anyone interested, I bought the mint velvet dress, it's not very nice on, too high on the bust for me so my boobs were hidden, the sleeves were flared out and the underslip was much shorter than the dress so it was higher than I expected, oh well money saved.
