Powder Compact

I'm looking to buy a powder compact as a Christmas present.

What I'm looking for is one that you can re-fill with pressed powder.

I know that you can buy pressed powder, but don't know of where you can buy a compact and then re-fill with powder - whose powder would fit in it?

Hope this makes sense!

Thanks

Estee Lauder do a range of pretty compacts which you can buy refils for.

Or, you can buy an antique compact but it would be best to measure the refil area and then see if it matches up in size with Estee Lauder's refils.

There could well be other higher end brands that do decorative refillable compacts but Estee Lauder are the only ones I know of for sure. Might be worth a trip round Selfridges beauty hall for a look.

I have a chanel one. When the powder is knackered I go in and get a refil.

Thank you for your replies, I'll have a look at those. I'm trying to find a pretty compact.

There used to be a company called Stratton (I think) who sold compacts and mirrors. John Lewis used to sell them in their beauty dept (where they sell mirrors/hairbrushes etc)

I got one for my mum years ago and she loved it. It had a mesh sifter thing (so you could fill with loose powder) or regular refils (max factor, rimmel etc) would slot right in.

Actually just found their website here

Stratton still exists - their vintage and modern compacts fit Max Factor Creme Puff refills perfectly (cheap, available everywhere, and have been around since the 1950s!)

Kigu's another good vintage brand. Most Kigu compacts are for loose powder - so as long as they have the sifter you can refill with any modern loose powder or powder foundation.

But, if you're specifically looking for pressed powder, the vintage brands Regent and Melissa also made compacts the size of Max Factor Creme Puff.

Apologies for a plug, but I the reason I'm a geek in this is that I started a website just last month for vintage compacts which fit modern powders! Happy to help with advice on vintage - you can email at jane at www.vanroecompacts.com

I have a Stratton compact and Rimmel pressed powder fits it too.
