Also - hair straighteners - do I need to spend a lot of money?

I was thinking of getting some hair straighteners...but I'm hardly going to use them so not really keen to spend a lot of money. Are the £9.99 ones you can buy worth getting? Or are they a false economy? Ought I to be spending £99.99??!!!

I've had cheapo ones before and then bought some GHDs the difference seems to be how hot they get and therefore how straight they really get your hair. The cheapo ones don't get as hot, therefore you have to go over and over the same bit of hair to get it straight and that's not supposed to be good for your hair. GHDs are much more efficient but as you suggest, cost heck of a lot more!

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 01/12/2010 21:48

I'd get the GHDs if you can. They're so much better at straightening your hair and for your hair (or so I'm told). I have cheaper ones but they're just not as good.

Ilythia · 01/12/2010 21:50

I bought some andrew collinge ones from ebay for a fiver including p + p and they work brilliantly.
ALso tesco has the babyliss 230 ones everyone was ravng about on another thread for half price at under £30 at the moment. Am thinking of asking for them for christmas....

Fleecy · 01/12/2010 21:54

I have the GHDs and would recommend them. After about six years, they're still going strong.

Have a nose around a few cashback sites. I managed to get 8% back. So still not cheap overall but better than nothing!

KangarooCaught · 01/12/2010 21:54

£35 Babyliss are good

Alibobster · 01/12/2010 22:45

GHD's aren't worth the money IMO. There are plenty others out there that get to a really high temperature but are a lot cheaper

bethelbeth · 01/12/2010 23:41

There's a reason why 98% of hairdressers use ghd's.

They are foolproof, long lasting and don't tear your hair.

Treat yourself- they're worth it

I've used 4 different hairdressers last 4 times I've been and none have used GHDs - all used pther brands withsame "technology". So, the cheaper similar types (Hairtools/She/something else/whatever) do the same job.

PS My hair looks shit, mind.

nancy75 · 01/12/2010 23:49

i have dreadful hair usually, i find that all hair straigteners can get my hair straight after a while, but ghd are quicker and are the only ones that get rid of the fuzzy halo effect.

NotAnotherBrick · 02/12/2010 10:07

Yeah, can't afford to treat myself, so it's cheapos or nothing I think Sad

hettie · 02/12/2010 10:31

Theres also a brand called Kodo i think, a girl i used to work with got these as her GHD's broke and she couldn't afford to replace them. My friends sister is a hairdresser and put her onto this brand as they are used in lots of salons as they are as good as GHD's apparently but cheaper. I have never used them myself and am not sure how much they are as this was a few years ago but it might be worth having a look online for prices and reviews.

youngblowfish · 03/12/2010 17:44

These Remington straighteners do the job really well and don't cost the earth. IMO, GHDs are only worth it if you are going to be using them daily/have really thick and unruly hair. Otherwise, they may actually be too hot and do more damage than good in the long term.

youngblowfish · 03/12/2010 17:46

Just realised they are half price ATM as well. (I swear I don't work for Boots Grin)

alexflower · 04/12/2010 17:45

Don't know if they are in price range but I just got some Mark Hill RAW straighteners for my birthday and they are fantastic! They were bought half price from Boots, I think they are about £50.

I read lots of good reviews of Mark Hill stuff before which is why I was keen to get them.
