following on from my vintage underwear thread anyone fancy sharing their top vintage (faux ou vrai) style tips...

eg links to sites, inspiring icons, pictures, clothes, accessories etc

so far I do like whatkatiedid for knickers etc. Also noticed they have some gorgeous cosmetics in there now, Besame range...anyone know them? the red velvet lipstick is amazing...

style icons for me would have to include audrey (though a bit skinny) marilyn (now theres an hourglass) bettie paige and pretty much all well dressed 50s laydees...

I remember my mum heading off to the local shops in a pencil skirt and heels (only a one and a half mile walk Shock) and I still remember the day I persauded her to buy a pair of dark red patent t-bars for wearing with said pencil skirts (I must have been all of about 6 or 7 Grin) - gosh I wish I had them now

in fact, my mum is one of my style icons now I think of it - have unbelievable photos of her and my dad in kew gardens in the 50s her in full swing coat and heels...beautiful

I don't dress vintage much, but would like to incorprate a bit more

anyone else with a love of this stuff, please share Smile

You're very similar in measurements to me actually, although my hips are 40". 40s and 50s fashion seems to work well with my shape, although I do wish my waist was smaller, especially in comparison to my hips as I'm edging more towards an apple than an hourglass.

The 751s are actually men's jeans, I happened upon them by accident as 501s have got much lower in the waist over past years.

Have you booked your hair appointment? If you are in London I can highly recommend Nina's Hair Parlour or Something Hells for vintage styling. Oh, and yes, I am based in London too. I do personal make up lessons if you're interested, but will admit it's a bit of a treat 'cos I'm not cheap Wink - but I do have over 16 years experience and a keen interest in vintage style.

I think I am going more apple than pear now...I dream of hourglasses (having tiny bosums - B cup if I'm lucky)

anyway, did the rosie the riveter hair scarf thing yesterday as hair was total mess...my word...I felt fab. BF was gobsmacked. We were at cinema with the kids and I came out of loo afterwards into foyer and he was like "hello beautiful, you look so fifties, love it" (he doesn't know about my secret investigations into how to channel that very look Grin). Must admit, it worked well with the leopard skin coat, jeans, boots and some very nice deep red lipstick...

back with my dishevveled mop today at work but going to put the headscarf back on shortly as I am off to kids xmas concert

great thing is it keeps your head warm too!

I will try some mens 751s, problem is usually my , ahem, large derriere

also I do have my hair booked already at a place I like which is sort of rockabilly/pin up styled. I have very unruly hair with a min dof its own though so there is only so much I can do. Question on my mind right now is whether to stay blonde or change it...

Nina's hair parlour does look fab though...

And I wouldn't expect a personal make up lesson from someone with your obvious skills and ability to be cheap havingkittens Wink

Smile

Have a look on youtube for 40s and 50s hair tutorials if you want some ideas. Also, the pinup-parade.com shop I mentioned has a great book on vintage hairstyling.

heh heh heh - went to school xmas concert with my lovely scarf do and my friend hollers down the aisle after the concert - "look out, it's Ena Sharples"...I quickly berated her for misjudgement of her cultural references, I was obviously giving it more of the Hilda Ogden (if only I'd had the curlers and drooping fag)... Grin

cheeky mare! and she's the one who looks fab in her old aunties handknits from the 1950s with a vintage pussycat bow blouse and some jeans too... grrrrr...

another mum from the class complimented me on my land girl look though, and she always looks fab (in a slightly bizarre and utterly personal way)

right, you tube - thanks for tip

it's me...just finished dusting the three ducks on the muriel Grin Wink

Havingkittens · 13/12/2010 22:15

I actually have a video clip that someone made of me in my headscarf morphing into Hilda Ogden and then back to myself again. Very funny.

HelloMyNameIsHilda · 14/12/2010 10:19

Grin now that I would LOVE to see Grin

kids tonight said to me they couldn't believe I wore "that thing" on my head at their christmas concert - initially they reckoned it was like a towel turban, then they agreed unanimously I resembled nothing more than a snake charmer...FGS don't they understand the word Retro ???

back in my curls today, off to our work xmas bash later and simply couldn't have borne the drunken mens comments on my snake charmer look Wink

hairdo day tomorrow....aaarrrrgh....still totally undecided about the colour (so suspect will stay blonde, for now...)

"I don't think anything worn by members of Generation X from their teens onwards should qualify as vintage yet."

I'm genm Y, I think, and the 90s are apparently vintage now as 20yrs have passed. I went to a vintage shop in Covent Gdn last week and saw items from Wallis and Miss Selfridge (not old stuff, but modern tags) so who knows?

Havingkittens · 20/12/2010 20:30

"Vintage" shops that sell stuff that new should be made to change their classification to "Second Hand" shops, otherwise charity shops might as well call themselves vintage shops too.
