Interview outfits. Are suits in or out?

Not a suit type job = not a suit type interview IMO.

i would wear the trousers shirt and sweater, take the jacket with you, then decide if you want to keep it on or off when you get there.
it might look odd if you are the only one there without a suit, having said that it doesnt always hurt to stand out.

i don't own a suit jacket, don't want to buy one if i don't need it y'see.

I work in a non-suit-wearing industry and I always took a smart jacket (though not necessarily one that matches the trousers as part of a suit) with me to interviews. Actually I think it is still in the back of my car from the last one

Can you say what sort of industry the job is in?

I don't work in a suit wearing profession (on the whole), but would always wear a suit for interview.

It depends on the job I'd say.

I'm a lawyer and know that knitwear wouldn't go down well. It needn't be a suit - smart separates are okay.

If you're not averse, try your local charity shops- I have got some great neckscarves from them.

I work in a not-suit environment and what you describe sounds fine. but i might be tempted to lose the jumper

so far the jumper is not feeling very welcome. honestly it's a thin silk sweater from hobbs, not a chunky sweat 'what' one might find on a tramp.

Exactly what vin said. If you don't want to wear a scarf, perhaps an interesting but not too OTT necklace (Hobbs are sometimes agood place for these) - and groomed hands.
