Pre birth haircut.... help me, my hormones have gone all wrong!

You know when you're on your period and you're out shopping and you think 'wow, those pink and orange tartan hipsters are fantastic...' (is that just me?!) well pregnancy seems to have put me in a permenant state of terrible taste and confusion....

I'm 36 weeks gone, in real real need of a haircut, I'm talking down to under my boobs, thin, straggly, can't ever ever wear it down cos it'll blow away yucky stringy brown hair... if I actually do anything with it it sort of disappears... if I put it in a ponytail (which is all I've done with it in years!) the ponytail is about an inch thick... wah.

So what do I do? I've so far had these suggestions from various family members - a perm, 'gerrit all cut off woman it looks terrible', dreadlocks.....

I'd really love something that makes me look like I have hair, lots of hair, that takes no morning prep work as I'm soon going to be mum to two.. and that looks niceish? I don't mind if it looks crazy-niceish.... I just don't know what to doooo! (Help?!! And don't laugh when I get something done and show it to you!)

U could have a shagy bob, that would thicken it up,could still be long enough to tie up,then hav some slices of colour put thru it?

pesme · 23/09/2005 12:56

don't cut it too short, cos only the choosen few will feel good 8 months pregnant and newly short hair.

bob sounds like a good option, at least you won't be able to shove it in a ponytail.

i have really thick hair and at the end of my pregnancy i looked like a large black animal had taken residency on my head and longed for whispy meg ryan like hair.

I'm scared I'm going to sit down in the chair and just blurt out something mad and end up looking terrifying! (Last time I went to one of those type of places I came out with pink streaks... which looked great till they washed out and went white!!)

I don't think I'm going to go for colour... it always depresses me that it just fades away in about 3 weeks or less and looks crap again... (I can never be bothered to get it re-done you see, and if I do my hair starts to get all nasty feeling..)

Sensible shaggy bob might be the answer (I really should keep the word SENSIBLE running through my head...)

yeh but not mumsy! -few layers, you'll look a million dollars!

fastasleep · 23/09/2005 13:09

Last time I asked for layers the m..why am I writing midwife? I've gone mad! The hairdresser said I didn't have enough hair.. ... do you think she was just crap? Or can it really be too thin?

You could always ask for a semi-permanent colour that fades out after 6 weeks or so. No touch ups then, and you can do a home wash-in wash-out when the baby is born and you don't feel like going out the house!

mummytosteven · 25/09/2005 17:15

don't know the position on hair colouring and PG - i think highlights are fine because they don't touch the scalp - but can be a bit on the pricey side. but then again they do last for a surprisingly long time. I wouldn't do a bob, as if you don't get it cut regularly, you could end up with annoying mid length hair that isn;'t quite long enough to put in a ponytail but bugs the hell out of you. I would go for simple and shoulder length (but I'm not a great hair cut person and think that layers are the work of the devil )

SoupDragon · 25/09/2005 17:27

I went to a trendy hairdressers (all chrome and staff dressedin black) and said "I'm bored with my hair. Cut it." The hairdresser looked, touched and then told me what he was going to do.I agreed and came out looking fab. I have very fine straight hair and have a jaw length bob with layers in it, slightly feathered round the face. IMO the layers take the weight out of the ends and that gives you more volume. Seems to be robust enough to just have a brush in the morning before the school run!

But beware! Do you have a fat pregnancy face?? What looks right now may not look right when you've had the baby and start losing weight

mummytosteven · 25/09/2005 18:43

ahem new posts on your thread

fastasleep · 25/09/2005 18:48

Pah I always have a fat face...

I'm not going for colour because I know I won't be bothered to redo it! And highlights are awful, I still have the remnants of nasty pink ones that turned white (I mentioned em before!)..

I was thinking maybe shoulder length and then doing something you'll all say 'noooo' at I was going to put some synthetic highlights in, maybe in dark blue or red, you just sort of braid them in at the top and then take them out and redo them when they start to grow out... if I can be bothered...

Ello MTS! (I'm having a pathetic phase at the moment...and I'm totally zoning out every 5 minutes!...) Hope you're having a nice time at your friend's

Myabe I will just go somwhere and say 'I'm bored!' although not the cheapy place I went to last time - I dread to think!

Then again it wasn't that cheap either cost me £85!

hmmm not so keen on synthetic highlights - in BLUE???????????????????????????

there must be haircut websites that you can look at loads of piccies for ideas

we've just been told in a determined manner that we are paying for the takeaway pizza for dinner tonight - so maybe we've outstayed our welcome

have got a cold and feeling sorry for myself and spent lots of time slumping on the settee. Essbee came over to my friend's and put a semi-permanent colour on my hair and trimmed it (she used to be a proper hairdresser many moons ago). Let's hope she sees this thread

fastasleep · 26/09/2005 09:31

I've always wanted braids in dark blue...

anyway just cos you never saw my pink hair it was PINK very very pink... and it looked good, honest!

Lol @ overstaying your welcome! Hope they don't go bunny boily on you can't afford a haircut anyway now so there's no point thinking about it! Hmph @ you getting a haircut!

I was tempted to have my hair all cut off in the later stages of pregnancy but my hairdresser advised me against it as she warned me that I might look/feel like a "pin-head" (the opposite of the ""lollypop head" look adopted by the ultra-skinny Hollywood stars at the mo !
I do get along well with her, she wasn't just being tactless or nasty!
Maybe the shaggy bob and some colours as suggested by others would be best
