On this dress?

I saw it today in the shop and am strangely drawn to it, but I can't decide if it's frumpy or not. It makes me think of Beryl Reid in Entertaining Mr Sloane/The Killing of Sister George - and if I'm old enough to remember those film, I'm probably too old to wear it..:(

If we decide it's not frumpy, how would you wear it? Opaques and heels? Any jewellery?

If it helps, I'm a size 12-14 (probably a 14 in Oasis), have an apple shape but great legs for my advanced years (44).

Too young for me? I like it because of the sleeves (can't bare the upper arms these days, I don't quite have bingo wings but they aren't exactly toned...)

I like it and would wear as you suggest with opaques and shoeboots.

No jewellery.

ArfurSleep · 26/11/2010 17:53

it all depends if you have norkage

boobage + round neck = frump city

lovely dress, do try on and see

aftereight · 26/11/2010 17:57

Love it, and would really show off your legs.
Opaque or patterned tights with it I think.

Jellykat · 26/11/2010 18:03

I like it, its classy looking!

You can't get a necklace in there with the neck detail, but possibly very simple stud earrings if you want a bit of sparkle?

Agree with opaques and shoeboots as long as they're not too heavy and overpowering, its a subtle dress!

Lovecat · 26/11/2010 19:22

Hmmm... thanks for that - I do have norkage but it's rather saggy these days so I think you're right, I shall have to try it on tomorrow and see...

I don't possess shoeboots. Can I justify a new dress AND new shoes? :o

Not if you have a bosom

purplepeony · 26/11/2010 20:05

Nice- only jewellery- pair of silver dangly earrings?

KristinaM · 26/11/2010 21:14

I'm a a size 9 lollipop ( apple on a stick) and would look TERRIBLE in that beautiful dress Sad

i need low neck due to large norks and dresses that come in under them, otherwise i look pg

hope it looks better on you Grin

Meglet · 26/11/2010 21:16

Opaques would be fine.

Heels if it's for the evening.

walkertexasranger · 26/11/2010 21:17

God I think it's a horrid dress.

Incredibly frumpy, kind of drag queen meets Mrs Slocombe.

Sorry, you asked for judgy pants.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 26/11/2010 21:22

I think the dress is ... OK. Not for me but I am giving you extra karma points for the Beryl Reid / Sister George / Joe Orton references.

The colour is lovely but perhaps because I too am (ahem) an hourglass and it would therefore not suit me I cannot get past it. If you have great legs and a willowy neck, go for it.

I like the arms too as my arms are terrible.

KristinaM · 26/11/2010 21:25

i do think its lovely, but you need to be very tall with no boobs

AnyFuleKno · 26/11/2010 21:27

Ooh I love it! very Margot

TheNextMrsDepp · 26/11/2010 22:25

Wow, I just bought something spookily similar, which is this.

I am spookily similar to you in age, and have fab legs too!Grin

So of course I think your dress is perfect!

I agree on the accessories - no necklace, black opaques and shoe boots.

SpikyBinkle · 26/11/2010 22:30

Not frumpy, classic

Lovecat · 26/11/2010 23:03

Ooh, that's lovely, NextMrsD - but I do have boobs, so am thinking I will be more Mrs Slocombe in it than ethereal willowy type.

Actually, I think Anyfule saying 'very Margot' is the kiss of death for it (assuming she means Leadbetter and not Hemingway...)

I will try it on, but am not hopeful.

And to cap it all, I think I'm getting a recurrence of the shingles I had last year - sorry, this has nothing to do with the dress, but it means I'm not up for going out this weekend and I need to moan! :(

Quite like it, though slightly reminds me of politicians wife.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/11/2010 23:07

SpikyBinkle's is much better. Better neckline. Makes it less frumpy.

TheNextMrsDepp · 26/11/2010 23:10

Spikybinkles dress or mine? Confused

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/11/2010 23:13

Sorry, NextMrsDepp, I meant yours. I love yours!

SpikyBinkle · 26/11/2010 23:17

I don't have a dress Sad although I'd very much like either.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 26/11/2010 23:20

I like them both - and didn't you say you were an apple shape? Looks perfect as tummy camouflage.

Like the second one better for a more 'hourglass' shape.

dearprudence · 26/11/2010 23:26

NextMrsDepp's dress has amazing sleeves and lower neck more likely to be flattering.

Lovecat's dress has the lovely flower detail round the neck, and is a really nice colour.

I wish I was thin enough to wear either - they're both beautiful. You need to try them on.

Menagerie · 27/11/2010 00:04

Love it. Love those sleeves and the colour. But like Mrs depps a wee bit more for its unfussy lower neckline. Great style though. I saw them all in the shops and sighed last week. Not for those of us with toddler shaped knees.
