Thinning hair

My hair has been going really thin for a few years and I recently discovered a lovely bald spot! Shock Blush

Do any hair thickening shampoos actually work??? Any recommendations?

I have the same thing - it can be hormonal, it can be dietary, and it can be stress related. I have been using hair, nail and skin vitamins and I have found these have helped. Also, I stopped colouring and straightening my hair, that also seems to have helped.

See if vitamins and haircare work, and if not, go and see your GP.

Hope it all improves for you.

I have the same problem and I use organic Tea Tree shampoo from Holland and Barrett.

I take a vitamin supplement for hair and nails and it has kelp in it ,which according to the health food shop is the one thing that hair needs.

Oh and also don't worry as this makes it worse. I don't think about it every day.

Was about to post similar. Had alopecia areata a few years ago and referral to dermatologist helped, but the front of my hair is thinning more and more and worrying me

ttalloo · 24/11/2010 22:19

I'm the same - hair thinning around my centre parting. I can still just about get away with telling myself it's not that bad but sometimes I catch sight of it in the mirror in a public loo with harsh lighting and then I know it's only a matter of time before I won't want to leave the house. Blush

I think my problem is hormonal, in which case there's not much I can do about it. I eat well, but I don't get enough sleep, I'm really stressed all the time, and I am really run down.

A hairdresser recently tried to flog me this stuff www.nioxin.com/en/home.aspx, which she said was brilliant, but I wasn't feeling rotten enough about my hair on that day to spend £42 on some bottles of shampoo. Today, though...!

Rexy · 24/11/2010 22:34

My hairdresser suggested Nioxin too and he is a world champion hairdresser and I do trust him - just not taken the plunge yet.

ttalloo · 24/11/2010 22:35

Well, Nioxin can't make it worse, I suppose!

Berk · 25/11/2010 08:13

I bought nioxin, haven't used it much as it just doesn't make me feel very nice and the spray wets the hair or makes it hard when dry so I'd only put it on at night. Once the hair is wet it looks even worse & depresses me more so I just ignore it!

ttalloo · 25/11/2010 22:47

That sounds horrible, berk. Maybe I'll try some vitamins instead. Has anyone tried Nourkrin?

conquita · 25/11/2010 23:56

There was a thread in the health section from someone who said they had started taking a folate supplement, the same as what you take if you are trying for a baby and noticed their hair started getting thicker. I have been taking this for a while too, and I think my hair sheds less in the shower now.

MaggieMuggins · 26/11/2010 14:58

Thanks for all the replies!

Definitely can't afford Nioxin so will give the vit supplements and not worrying a go! Grin

Tried nourkrin when had alopecia but not designed for that, v expensive. Would like to try now as loss different but it is expensive.

Am taking pregnacare now, not noticing much. Thinking of trying wellwoman tricologic vitamins and seeing doc. Am also only 31 so v worried for the future.

Urbanvoltaire · 27/11/2010 01:49

My hair was thinning badly a year ago, every time I washed it (every 3 days) or brushed it, my brush was full, it was like a dog moulting. Went to GP, had blood tests, transpires I had an iron deficiency so started a course of iron tablets, plus Hair Vit & general multivitamins for 3 months, hair started growing back.

I don't take any extra supplements now, hair fine & still growing back.

BitOfFun · 27/11/2010 01:53

Folic acid, apparently, is the thing to try.

BitOfFun · 27/11/2010 01:54

And go to your GP and ask for a referral to a trichologist. It can't hurt.

moragbellingham · 27/11/2010 08:31

I tried Nioxin and although it smelt nice it did nothing,

merrywidow · 27/11/2010 08:40

Any type of hairloss is alopecia

Female Diffuse alopecia - general thinning (hormonal)

Alopecia Areata/ totalis/universalis - patches of baldness which can spread to the whole body ( can be for variety of reasons but is the body believing the hair to be foreign so it gets rid of it; its an auto immune issue )

Traction alopecia - hair has been 'pulled out' by braiding or tying etc

Try to get your doctor to get a referral to a trichologist- if they wont then go to institute of trichologists website and find one near your ( privately it will cost though)

If hairloss is hormonal wash it regularly and if you cant afford a 'hairloss' shampoo use something which thoroughly cleanses the scalp - teetree could be good. Nourakin i think is a fish oil based vitamin, so buy a cheaper alternative ( you could always look on the back of the box to find out then substitute ).

Sometimes trichologists use steroids to stimulate hairgrowth in alopecia areata, Its a bit of a guess of mine but you could try using some HC45 ( mild steroid cream ) and rub a little on a bald patch ?

Poodlehorse · 27/01/2011 12:54

I'm using Nioxin and while it has only been 6 weeks I am feeling a difference and starting to see a difference I think. I think if you were having the hair that wet with the spray you were using too much, I just use a little squirt and rub it into the scalp with my fingertips, I only use it on the crown/fringe area as that is where my problem is and I was also told that it was an optional "booster" rather than being a necessary part of the regime. As for the shampoo/scalp therapy I was told use a peasized amount and that I may need to use another conditioner/masque if my hair wasn't getting enough from it, so far I haven't had an issue or felt the need. the conditioner is for the scalp more than the hair I was told. I think they do have their own masques for that reason but my hairdresser suggested just to use my normal stuff on the ends. I was told it could take 3 months to see any progress although the Nioxin website suggested a month. It is expensive to buy but because you need a tiny amount (takes a bit to get your head round not having loads of suds) it will I think last AGES.
