Where do I look for a trendy armchair?

I want a new armchair (and possibly matching sofa) for our conservatory extension.

I want it to have light coloured wooden legs , and come in either a nice velvety fabric or luscious print...

So, sort of like this:

IKEA But more stylish, and with arms

or possibly this
Next but less chunky

or this
John Lewis but not so heavy/ dark (or expensive!)

I'm finding it hard... where else should I look?

Hmm... also like this but not the price!

Is DFS stuff really crap? I saw something on their website which was cheap and cheerful...

I suppose it's only going to get occasional use so doesn't need to be especially hard-wearing....

This from Dwell?

moondog · 22/11/2010 20:44

I'd get secondhand and pay to have recovered.
Unless you spend hundreds or even thousands, you will never get a good new one.

Laura Ashley charge about £500 for each of their and they are chipboard and glue put together by Asian serfs.

This could turn into chair 'porn' Grin, I want one of www.backinaction.co.uk/gravity

Bonsoir · 22/11/2010 20:48

I bought bergères in France by tracing the manufacturers who supply the nice shops, and then going direct. I specified the finish, the quality of the upholstery (horsehair/feathers) and could choose any material I liked. I paid 50% of the price I would have paid retail.

Maybe you could do something similar?

orienteerer · 22/11/2010 20:49

OK this is not "velvety or luscious print'' but looks better in the flesh than on the web.

noddyholder · 22/11/2010 20:50

god bonsoir I used to re cane bergeres for my sins!

if you google chairs for cherubs it will take you to their ebay shop and they are great chairs for the price and some lovely fabrics They will also make a matching footstool if you want

Whippet · 22/11/2010 21:25

Thanks for all the suggestions so far...

Yes, I have been looking for secondhand chairs on ebay, but no luck yet.

orienteerer - I don't really want a tub chair as we already have two of those elsewhere in the house and I don't find them very comfortable!

Noddy - aren't those just chairs for children though? (Look a bit too 'armchairy' anyway though...)

You have to constantly do sweeps through secong hand/antique shops.

My two pride and joy armchairs cost me £50 each and are so well made and damned heavy I can hardly move them. I held out until i found exactly what I wanted.

noddyholder · 23/11/2010 08:29

They do big ones too.I have used them to 'stage' rooms and was really surprised at how good they are. Agree though you can't beat a traditional old chair with good structure and getting it reupholstered and covered.

Havingkittens · 23/11/2010 09:33

In answer to your earlier question, yes DFS are shit and their after care customer service when your cheap furniture inevitably breaks within a year or so of purchase is dreadful.

animula · 23/11/2010 11:09

Second the moondog (and others) suggestion of second-hand and recovering.

Try googling Liberty + armchairs for some ideas of what to recover in. The upstairs floor is filled with some beautifully, and artfully, re-covered armchairs.

i have the Jennylund Ikea one in the Red and White floral pattern. The plain White is also lovely It comes into its own at this time of year very Christmassy and so very comfy
