How do you wear a scarf stylishly?

Not a woolly type scarf, but a thin chiffony type thing. I seem to be building up a large collection of them cos I can't resist buying them, then I spend ages arranging them - then I take them off again cos they look naff. Any tips, oh wise ones?

I think you are either the type of person that can throw on a scarf and look fabulous, or you can't. I fall into the latter category sadly. My theory is it is down to neck length with a large dose of innate style thrown in. I look longingly at women with scarves (either full on Dr Who, or chiffony), I can never ever replicate the way they just artlessly fall..

Sadly, I think you're right olivia (are you really from Bolivia?) - you've either got the knack or you haven't. You have to wear them with a certain insouciance and I never can - always too worried that I haven't got it on properly. I always thought it would be one of those things that came with being "grown up" - am still waiting

I love scarves and wear one most days.

I either fold them in half (so it becomes half the length) and then put the two ends through the looped other end (does that make any sense)

or I loop round my neck once and then just to ends in a single knot (again does this make any sense...)

Yes, I mean long chiffony type things vinvino - just long thin ones generally. But I'm thinking that olivia and Prem are both right, its a lost cause methinks.

Hadn't thought about strangling issue but now you come to mention it ...perhaps there's a reason I've never got the knack of them.

i have a Green silk one from Lk Bennett with roses on i wear a lot i either wear it pussy bow style or more frequently like a vicars dogcollar with ends hanging down and sometimes tied

Makes sense to me. That's exactly how I wear mine.

Hermes give instructions on knotting their scarves, mainly the big 90x90cm ones. I think here might have links to them, look at the "Knotting cards" links.

I wear square ones - folded diagnally in to a triangle - and tie the ends at the back. For some reason this works well on me

I wear rectangle ones - folded in half - to make a loop and then put the ends through - rather like you might wear a wool scarf and this looks nice too.

Oooh I want some scarves now. Always thought I couldn't wear them because of boobs. But those links have inspired me.

Long thin ones - I wear looped round once and the ends hanging down.Or I do as whoneedssleep does but just put one end through - then twist the loop and put the other end through. it makes it sit nicely, that's probably impossible to understand but I'll try and find a link.

I find square ones harder, but have looked at Hermes links before - if you master the Hermes fold then it's easier. I love scarves and I think I suit them, but I made a point of learning how to wear them and then actually doing it so I don't agree it's a lost cause Also am not French.

OK, this variation on the European loop is what I do, except I twist the loop and put the other end through rather than bringing it round, but the end result is the same. It's the 2nd one, Tying Scarves with a Simple Knot.

I'm scarf-mad, have a vast cupboard of woolly/warm ones and wear quite a few of the wide cottony ones in the summer. All sorts of knots are possible depending on the size of scarf and whether you actually want to keep your neck snug or are just going for "style".

I've never been a fan of squares, though - I always think of the Queen and her headscarves for some reason.
