Are watches still worth spending money on? If so which are the ones to have? Leather strap or metal ? Best makes? Thoughts please!

I think a good watch is worth the money if you can afford it, but I've met very few people that think the same way.

I have a great love for Breitlings, but they are hugely expensive. Don't like Rolex.

I like decent watches too. I have a Skagen myself, stainless steel mesh strap, very plain looking (I don't like bling or too many functions). It didn't break the bank as Breitlings would Smile. DD1 has a lovely Fossil (leather strap) that I borrow sometimes.

Well I have a Cartier Tank and love it but its down to personal taste and budget I guess.

Yes, I have a metal strap Tissot...tis lovely. DH has a Breitling, leather strap, tis even more lovely...Grin

I've got a vintage Tissot, manual watch. It's a man's watch probably circa 1950 something.

It's got a black leather strap and I'm very fond of it.

MissBeehiving · 21/11/2010 08:28

Had a vintage Rolex - too much of a faff having to take it on/off etc. I now have a black Breo which is fab and I can keep on all the time.

Meggles76 · 21/11/2010 08:58

I have a Tissot with metal strap that DH bought me when I had DD. It was probably about £115 6 years ago. They are lovely quality watches but won't break the bank ike some brands.

More recently I was bought a Mondaine watch with a black strap. Again it was probably arounf the £120 mark but it is lovely and has s super clear face.

For the gym and days out with the kids, I have a cheap breo watch which is fine but it is not special in my view

purplepeony · 21/11/2010 09:01

It depends what you want.
I had had my Tissot for 35 years before it was becoming unreliable.

I was prepared to pay a reasonable amount for a watch but had i found something cheaper i would have bought that!

I looked at Tag, Ebel, Seiko, Tissot and in the end chose an Omega mimi constellation for almost £1K in stainless steel. Ilove it- I wear little jewlellery but always feel good witha nice watch- it's not flash and is between sporty and dressy.

Some people freak at that cost but it's probably less than the cost of 2 holidays and will last a lifetime.

I haven´t got anything really pricey, but they work & have done for years!

A basic wind up timex, my first watch, nearly 40yrs old.

A wind up Rotary, had nearly 30yrs,

A wind up Frey(?) cocktail watch.

Not sure how old, was my great grandmothers, I think.

lucy101 · 21/11/2010 09:02

I have a vintage watch - a 1961 Omega mens - just gorgeous. My DH has two vintage watches too. You can buy ones in as new condition and they are much much cheaper than new ones and are IMO more beautiful (but I like vintage things). My DH's auto rolex (wedding pressie) from late 60's is gorgeous (immaculate and cost under £1000). They don't seem to go wrong either.

lucy101 · 21/11/2010 09:03

I meant to add if you look after them they don't depreciate much either.

missmartha · 21/11/2010 09:16

No they don't depreciate much. Every time I visit my jeweler to get something repaired he lusts after my watch.

Not me, my f*ing watch.

Bishoplyn · 21/11/2010 11:12

I have a Tag and love it. Mind you it was a present, don't know that I could afford to buy myself one!

It still looks like new 10 years later. I swim in it, do housework etc.

The only hassle is having to send it away to the factory when it needs a new battery - this means its gone for about 2 weeks and costs about £45. You have to do this to guarantee the waterproofing
