Clarins, am I worth it?

Never posted here before but I've been thinking recently if there really is a benefit in the premium skin care products.

I'm in my late 40s and have used Clarins for about 10 years or so, but continue to wince when replenishing cleansers, day and night cream etc.I recently ran out of night cream and bought Aldi's £1.99 night stuff instead
Truth be told my face didn't fall off and no
adverse effects, so am I being deluded by spending almost £40 more for the same stuff served by lovely staff?

(I think I probably am Confused)

ps too fat to be wrinkly, and have always loathed sun bathing

hmmmm I'm interested to hear opinions on this too as I shell out for premium skin care and I'm starting to wonder if I can get away with the cheaper stuff. Credit crunch and all that.....

IMO its all a complete load of hype and marketing bullshit. A full page ad in a magazine for a branded luxury product can cost £60,000. You have to sell a lot of pots of facecream to fund this.

Nothing can penetrate the skin apart from oil and water so all 'pseudo scientific' speak about miracle products is complete rubbish.

I would think that a SPF is important, and probably something like using a muslin cloth with cleanser is a good thing as it is exfoliating, but honestly, as long as it doesn't sting or make your face feel tight, and it leaves your face clean, £2 or £200, I would rather buy a pair of shoes, or have a haircut..

WherecanIhide · 20/11/2010 19:51

I agree with olivia. Lovely packaging and nice feelings of having something 'special' but other than that, a rip off. I use sun cream every day (all year) and aqueas (sp?) as a moisturiser and cheap cleanser from Tescos. x

gregssausageroll · 20/11/2010 20:03

I've cut back from premium to olay and don't notice the difference! I do think it is all packaging!

I have not stopped buying Claring Tonic and Relax products though! Can't help it!

groak · 20/11/2010 20:05

Cyclax aloe vera face cream, bright green cream, huge pot, £3 bargain himes, my nan used it for years and swore by it, and i use it too. never sunbathe so its just fighting normal aging and looking rough!

I had read somewhere that M&S products are made at the same factory as Clarins, and basically got the exact same ingredients for a better price. Maybe worth a try.

brimfull · 20/11/2010 23:48

if it's true that
'Nothing can penetrate the skin apart from oil and water so all 'pseudo scientific' speak about miracle products is complete rubbish. '
how come we have patches for nicotine/analgesic drugs /hormones etc ?

retinol gets into skin doesn't it?

saying that I use whatevers on offer atm

purplepeony · 21/11/2010 09:06

I don't rate Clarins- used to, but not convinced.
I like Clinique and REN.
Have sensitive, eczema prone skin.

I use cheapo cleansers such as L'Oreal as they are on your skin for 30 seconds and as long as they do the job, no need to spend £30 on a cleanser.

Most important thing for skin is to avoid sun damage- use a high SPF every single day- Iuse Clinique city block spf 40 and have done for 15 years. I am 55 and don't have 1 wrinkle.

moragbellingham · 21/11/2010 09:11

I use Clarins cleansers. I'm always trying anything I can get my hands on in Boots to see if I can replace it.
Everything so far has left my skin in a state but am hoping Olay (bought for £2 on offer) will be the oneSmile.
When I think what I used to use as a teenager and in my 20's why shouldn't it work as well? Skin was prob more in need of TLC then!

I'm currently using L'Oreal Youth code and La Roche Posay. These aren't premium but aren't cheap either and I find them excellent.

purplepeony · 21/11/2010 10:00

Boots own brand cleansers for about £1 are great- they come in different skin types - blue top is unperfumed. This is not No. 7, it's just Boots own and usually found bottom shelf!

TBH having good skin is about more than creams andlotions- it's about lifestyle; very little booze, plenty of omega 3, fruit and veg and most important- exercise!

mercibien · 21/11/2010 16:56

Thanks all, for your views, especially the one about advertising costs.

I may try the m&s stuff when I run out of cleanser/toner, as have used Boots in the past but I seem to recall it left my skin feeling sensitive.

clarins aroma products are lovely
the tonic oil ditto

Bishoplyn · 21/11/2010 19:03

Here sells Clarins cheaply.

whensitgunnahappen · 21/11/2010 19:21

I work in the skin care industry. It's really interesting peoples opinions! Of course. Your not going to die if you don't use good skin care. But you will look better for it. Clarins and m&s are not made in the same place. But some colour products are (h&m and mac make up for example) estee Lauder group own about 70% of beauty halls anyway ( mac, Lauder, clinique, bobby brown, origins ect all estee!) so you will find similarities. If you use a good non alcoholic toner (clinique is very abrasive!!! I know one store where they clean tables with it) and a good moisturiser you can get away with cheaper cleansers and night creams. Personally, I mix brands, clarins cleansers toners, eye creams. Their bio serum for dehydration is incredible! I use chanel moisturiser and Lauder night cream. Clarins mask and exfoliator aswell (actually looking at it it's mainly clarins at the mo) Then my make up is a whole different thread!!! Boots no 7 is also very good. I'm gunna try their serum.

whensitgunnahappen · 21/11/2010 19:24

P.s anywhere that sells product cheaply beware! It is normally out of date or old product that they buy and re sell cheaply. It will not do what it should do and the active ingredients way cause re-actions. I wouldn't recommend it! X
