Can I wear boots to a black tie do? I'm not really keen on heels

I am wearing this dress in navy with opaques

I wanted to wear boots I already have - they are smart with a low kitten heel, about calf length.

The alternative would be high black wedges with sequiny things (ancient Hobbs ones)

With short dresses I prefer boots normally to 'balance' the shape. I feel silly with heels on. But then I don't normally go to black tie dinners - this is a work thing.

What's the verdict?

I wouldn't wear boots, but the wedges sound great

flowerybeanbag · 19/11/2010 14:26

I wouldn't wear boots, wedges better out of the two. I wouldn't wear opaques either though, are you not keen on thinner tights?

doggiesayswoof · 19/11/2010 14:36

I hate thin tights and I can't wear them without ripping them!

The dress is really very quite short so I need the security of opaques.

The lady in the catwalk vid is wearing boots and looks quite groomed still.

Tbh, I know i'll probably get a wee flamette, as I do when I suggest shoes, but I'd wear DMs.
You'd get away with it because it's a bit "out-there", and comfortable people look waaaay better than tottering women in seldom-worn heels.
As long as you have smart hair etc.

Maybe patent dms and yes, sheer tights.

Yes to boots,

But I wear almost nothing but boots Grin

higgle · 19/11/2010 15:22

Boots? to a black tie do? certainly not.

minipie · 19/11/2010 15:36

I think you could get away with boots TBH. Sounds better than the wedges IMO.

Boots are definitely not traditional black tie but then people are dressing less and less smartly these days .

Go heavy on the blingy jewellery, or do an up-do with your hair, that will compensate for the relative unsmartness of the boots.

A lady at my office has this dress and she always wears it with patent boots and opaques and looks gorgeous in it. I think I'd wear shoes/heels rather than boots, but I do know on her it looks fab.

takingchances · 19/11/2010 17:33

You cannot wear boots to a black tie do. You just can't.

Your wedges sound nice but if they're ancient are they battered-looking?

Fab dress, by the way.

traceybath · 19/11/2010 17:49

I'd go with opaques which look much more on-trend than sheer tights but how about some shoeboots to go with them?

Bit more dressy than normal boots.

Lovely dress by the way.

mrsbigw · 19/11/2010 17:54

love the dress but for a black tie event I wouldn't wear it with boots.

upahill · 19/11/2010 17:55

Anyother time I would say yes to the boots and that dress. It is lovely but as it is a black tie do I would have to say no.

takingchances · 19/11/2010 17:59

Oh yes traceybath, shoe boots! They'd be GREAT.
