Ok Stylish mumsnetters - I need your help!

Oh god I have to look for stuff for myself and not the kids. How the hell do I start? I have wasted 3 shopping days, worn myself and the kids out and have sent them to bed dosed on chocolate buttons and am now failing to internet shop too

Background: 30yr old 5ft, size 12/14 (but breastfeeding still so a little top heavy fairly unadventurous dresser who prefers loose styles to hide the bumpy bits and mummy tummy less flattering features of my figure.

Remit: I need a smartish outfit for a pre-application visit (that doesn't shout interview because it isn't but still puts forward, a good impression) for my first job as a GP as I qualified just before my son was born (yes I know boo hiss, nasty GPs lets move on )

I am so tempted at the moment to go in jumper and jeans as that is all I have in my post-baby wardrobe! so all suggestiosn greatly appreciated!

The third one that Tracey linked to looks as if it might be better for you length-wise, Biscuit. Kew stuff often comes up long and thus rather mumsy.

I agree that a dress usually hits just the right note in these situations. Not too formal, not too casual. I like tracey's suggestions. Phase Eight also has some good daytime options.

Some practices are quite laid back in which case very smart jeans and a crisp shirt could work. I know for a fact that my GP wears this to work; with smarter boots and no scarf.

Thanks :D I like the idea of a dress but I haven't worn a dress in about 14 years - Im much more a trousers sort of person. I really like the 3rd one you lined to tracey and am wondering if i could where it with trousers as sort of a tunic/dress?

Thanks notadrugrep yes thats pretty much what I would wear for a normal days work (and i really like the last link and might add that to my wardrobe for when I finally do get a job or start locumming )

Maybe I could pull off a light sweater and trousers?

ok this is probably overstepping the mark but:

biscuits the informal visit is so important, i've talked to partners and managers about this and they make a lot of their decision based on this visit.

I agree a nice dress and boots is a good luck, not too formal but more flattering than jeans and more pulled together too.

How about a top like this which has pretty detailing on it, with some wide leg dark trousers, or skinny trousers tucked into boots?

ok, the knot waist top could work with trousers - you lot are good at this! No dresses twoboots - except with trousers, I just can't do it.

Afraid you are really limiting yourself by ruling out dresses and skirts, they can be so much more flattering, especially with opaque tights. i think drugrep was onto something with the personal shopper.

How about highwaisted trousers which arent so fashionable but still really flattering and something like this shirt

I thik you are probably right twoboots but I don't want to to feel uncomfortable by going too far from my prebaby style (which was pretty dull and conservative) plenty of time for that later when so mcuh doesn't ride on it.

I think I might do the personal shopper thing at some point but at the moment woul dhave to do it with two little ones in tow as DH is working up until when I need the outfit.

maybe a cashmere sweater, even sainsburys and tesco do them.

WHAT ABOUT a really classic style thus if you are a no dress merhcnat

a pair of plain woolene trousers ( no crap balck marks ones)dreaded white stuff but hey
a smart tailerd IRONED shirt not ideal but htis kind of thing

a BELT ( patent black)

or htis kind of look? i have these trousers and they ROCK - a bit of stretch in, amazinly flattering

Or the rather dull a line skirt, knitted tights and knee lenght oots

Thanks everyone, I ordered the dress from kew (third one) but it is VERY long as in past my knees so its going back as I wanted to wear it with trousers.

In the end I went with decent trousers, this which looks better on than in the picture and this scarf to deal with the cleavage issue

..... it went well and they have invited me for interview - so tomorrow I'm off to find a suit! Thanks for all your help :)
