I have a plain wood table and have either a cloth or just put plates straight on table. But do do candles, flowers etc.

Am über-minimalist, however, and want all attention focused on my Astier de Villatte plates!

brimfull · 13/11/2010 21:48

ok will now have to google your fancy aster whatsit plates

my table too big for cloth ,looks ridiculous

Wow - they are gorgeous Bonsoir.

They make my John Lewis value range look even more drab Envy

I trawled the internet and various shops last year looking for place mats. It is strangely difficult to find nice ones.
Do you want heat proof or not?

Are placemats unfashionable?? Who knew?

I struggle to find nice ones too. Currently using some bright Ikea ones, but they aren't heatproof. John Lewis have quite a few.

Somehow my dining table never looks inviting like the ones in the catalogues. I clearly need help.

\link{http://www.jennyduff.co.uk/index.php\i have this site on favs} for when i'm richer

TheNextMrsDepp · 14/11/2010 14:29

Mmmm southeastastra, those are lovely! DH would have a coronary if I told him those prices, though.

Bonsoir · 14/11/2010 19:12

Try Zara Home - there have some round bead ones in silver or gold that you might like.

Pannacotta · 14/11/2010 19:15

I think they are a bit naff, sorry.
WHats wrong with putting plates straight on the table? Especially if you have a decent table and smart plates...
I think I'd spend the monry on nice plates instead!

brimfull · 14/11/2010 19:25

naff or not
i have bought plain black fabric ones from homesense, decided against colourful ones
i am in canada atm
homesense much better here than one near me in uk

That Jenny Duff stuff is amazing! And DH keeps going on about or need for coasters... I see a shopping opportunity.

I am firmly in the placemat camp. I love my oak table and hate hiding it with a cloth, but plonking down the plates bare looks silly to me. I have some really fun, mid century mod-inspired ones from Canada. For some reason placemats are a lot nicer over there.

moragbellingham · 14/11/2010 19:40

mydeco
limited range of stores but quite nice. Last year Zara home was charging £29 for delivery for a tablecloth and mats to UK!

TheNextMrsDepp · 14/11/2010 20:16

I don't see the point of placemats you can't wash or wipe clean. Had some seagrass ones once - they lasted about two weeks before they were so caked in fish pie, gravy, butter etc that they had to go in the bin.

Surely you need some sort of placemat if you don't want to trash a table with hot plates etc.? But finding out they're naff is a bit of a shock tbh....

Pannacotta · 14/11/2010 20:30

I think a tablecloth looks nicer and seems less hassle to me than worrying about several placemats which would all have different levels of staining etc!
But then I am quite lazy on the domestic front, also I like simple interiors, nothing too fancy.

TheNextMrsDepp · 14/11/2010 20:58

Yes, but where do you get a decent tablecloth from? The ones in the shops all look like something my granny would use.

southeastastra · 14/11/2010 20:59

john lewis for cloth ones - i find the quite long lasting and you can just bung in the wash

Pannacotta · 14/11/2010 21:01

John Lewis or Habitat for plain cotton table cloths, these are the nicest I think.
