I have a plain wood table and have either a cloth or just put plates straight on table. But do do candles, flowers etc.

Am über-minimalist, however, and want all attention focused on my Astier de Villatte plates!

I struggle to find nice ones too. Currently using some bright Ikea ones, but they aren't heatproof. John Lewis have quite a few.

Somehow my dining table never looks inviting like the ones in the catalogues. I clearly need help.

WHats wrong with putting plates straight on the table? Especially if you have a decent table and smart plates...

I am firmly in the placemat camp. I love my oak table and hate hiding it with a cloth, but plonking down the plates bare looks silly to me. I have some really fun, mid century mod-inspired ones from Canada. For some reason placemats are a lot nicer over there.

I don't see the point of placemats you can't wash or wipe clean. Had some seagrass ones once - they lasted about two weeks before they were so caked in fish pie, gravy, butter etc that they had to go in the bin.

Surely you need some sort of placemat if you don't want to trash a table with hot plates etc.? But finding out they're naff is a bit of a shock tbh....

I think a tablecloth looks nicer and seems less hassle to me than worrying about several placemats which would all have different levels of staining etc!
But then I am quite lazy on the domestic front, also I like simple interiors, nothing too fancy.

Yes, but where do you get a decent tablecloth from? The ones in the shops all look like something my granny would use.

john lewis for cloth ones - i find the quite long lasting and you can just bung in the wash

John Lewis or Habitat for plain cotton table cloths, these are the nicest I think.
