Christening Outfits for Older Baby & Toddler

We are getting my DS [nearly 3] and my DD [1] christened at our Catholic church this December. I have outfits for them that I am really pleased with, but i'm worried about whether they'll be appropriate.

DS - smart checked shirt in lots of lovely muted colours with grey corduroy trousers

DD - dark blue party dress with floral detail around hem with smocking, short sleeves and puffy skirt

I'm assuming you don't have to do the whole white gown thing if you're children are older, and that a smart outfit is fine. TBH, the only alternative seems to be the whole 'mini adult' type of outfit - eg. waistcoat and smart trousers for boy, taffeta dress for girl, which is lovely, but really not my personal taste - i like kids to look like kids i guess!

Would ask others at church but they had their babies christened as babies, so can't really advise, so any feedback or opinions would be appreciated.

Don't really want to ask the priest either as it seems a bit of a superficial concern! But i want them to be suitably dressed, so i'm not treating it as a fashion parade, honest!

DS1 was christened at 10mos in a Catholic church, and as he was a big sturdy, crawling boy who would have looked ridiculous in white frills, I put him in black corduroy trousers, with a black, orange and white striped jumper and white shirt. He looked adorable, and the priest didn't seem to mind!

Thanks ttalloo I am very pleased with them myself, but don't want to be making some terrible christening faux pas!

coffeemum those outfits sound lovely. Dc1 was christened at nearly 2 and he wore a pale blue kaftan style shirt with navy embroidery from monsoon and navy chinos.dc3 was christened on Sunday and she wore pink cords and a lovely lacy white cardi as all the dresses she tried on made her look bald!Poor dc2 had to wear a yuk smocked dress that my mum bought for her.

They will probably tell you this, but you do actually need something white (there's a bit about white garments) but apparently a shawl or muslin will do.

I Have just asked this as we are getting our dd (almost3) baptised in afew weeks! I have bought a fab little pink party dress which she can wear again! I think as long as you have your white garment - shawl / blanket then you will be fine!

Matsikula and NaomiPaula - thank you! This was exactly the kind of detail I was worried about. I will have to ask the priest I think to be sure. Our church is quite laid back, i think, but I really don't want to mess up and not do what's required. Thanks for the heads up, much appreciated. I'm a bit stumped about what the white item could be though - a shawl would be okay for baby DD I suppose, but will probably be a bit weird on hulking toddler DS! Ah well, I want to be appropriate and respectful to the step they and we are taking in having them christening, so i must get researching...

CoffeeMum - we needed, as Matsikula says, something white for our DSs Catholic christenings, but all we needed was a white shawl to cover them with at the appropriate time. Unless your priest is ultra-old-fashioned, there shouldn't be any need for you to go back to the drawing board and find alternative outfits!
