Can I have a fringe with curly hair?

It's kind of half-way between curly and wavy and at the moment it is REALLY depressing me. It just looks scruffy and awful - it's just past jaw-length, with some half-hearted layers in it.

I've been straightening it every day for about the last 4 years, but now I want to wear it curly, but I don't know what style to go for. I have been to 4 different hairdressers in the past year, trying to find someone who can cut it in a style that doesn't require straightening, but every one of them has absolutely wrecked it Sad

It looks horrible if it gets too long, but if it's too short it looks like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/081020/Roseanne-history/johnny-galecki_l.jpg&imgrefurl=www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20234609_6,00.html&usg=__WXSszacDRxhZbPnmfYKXQXYg6sU=&h=400&w=300&sz=41&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=mR84h_PaBaVW5M:&tbnh=134&tbnw=107&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djohnny%2Bgalecki%2Broseanne%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26biw%3D1366%26bih%3D587%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=125&vpy=85&dur=337&hovh=259&hovw=194&tx=110&ty=89&ei=VcraTJbUF8exhQf21NXcAg&oei=VcraTJbUF8exhQf21NXcAg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this but worse.
I think I want it just above jaw length but with a fringe, but I can't find any pictures of what I want. Can anyone help? Or suggest any alternative styles?

I have seen a very heavy swept to the side fringe work with curly hair. I'll see if I can google a pic hang on

Pinkjenny · 10/11/2010 16:41

I have curly hair and wear it straight a lot of the time, so had a fringe for a while, which was disastrous. My hair is quite coarse, so it just stuck out of my head at a right angle.

Curly hair with fringe is a bit 80s, I think, and a possible styling nightmare, but I could be biased.

NotAnotherChinHair · 10/11/2010 16:43

Don't do it...

cyb · 10/11/2010 16:47

scroll down to Nicole ritchie hair

cyb · 10/11/2010 16:50

Of course her hair has been very styled fo rthat shot

The problem with short curly hair is, as its name suggest, it can resemble pubes

So can you grow your fringe out slowly? The added weight will make it fall much better

Pinkjenny · 10/11/2010 16:50

Nicole Richie's is gorgeous, but that is tonged, as far as I can tell. It depends on what your natural wave is like, and how much maintenance is required.

fairycake123 · 10/11/2010 16:51

Pinkjenny, I laughed out loud at "it just stuck out of my head at a right angle," because I am all too familiar with that particular look. And I agree that the potential for 80s-ness is significant. When I googled it, a lot of the images were of women with curly hair and dead straight, obviously blow-dried fringes, which just looks ridiculous in my opinion. It's like having 2 completely different hairstyles at once.

I don't know why I've got fixated on the idea of having a fringe. I think I need to get past it.

Rannaldini, it's a good look but I'm just not sure I coulf pull it off...

It reminds me of girls at school who had perms, and their hair was really crunchy and full of mousse, with a straight, blow dried fringe.

Not good. Ever.

scoutliam · 10/11/2010 16:54

I got one in at the week-end. Big mistake.

It looked lovely until it rained and now I look like a demented gerbil.

I'm having a Brazilian blow dry next weekend to last me until it grows out a bit.

I should of stuck with my swept over fringe like affair like someone else suggested.

Scootergrrrl · 10/11/2010 17:06

The man on Come Dine With Me now on c4 seems to have curly hair and a straight fringe. Is that the look you're aiming for? Grin

Frizzbonce · 10/11/2010 18:37

@Fairycake, I have wavy/curly hair and have tried a fringe on a few occasions - always a disaster. The only time it worked was in the early eighties when with my Axl Rose Groupie look, (mad wild hair) I looked briefly fashionable. Even a side swept fringe would go all early eighties and I looked like a refugee from Dynasty.

But I've now found this place which does clip on fringes and have ordered a side swept one - sending pics so the colour is matched.

It might work for you.

As for styling your hair, it's really bad that four hairdressers messed it up for you. It took me years before I found a nice local

mathanxiety · 10/11/2010 18:45

Fringes look like sausages on me. Three chubby little sausages hanging over my forehead. Ever so sophisticated.

tethersend · 10/11/2010 19:55

This could look nice... or this

fairycake123 · 11/11/2010 00:02

Thank you all so much - not just for making me laugh, a lot, but also for convincing me that with regard to the fringe, well, I need to just not do it.

Some of the pics are gorgeous ( Envy ) but the potential for nightmare levels of frizz can't be ignored, and I think I've had enough hair trauma for one year Grin

I reckon I'm going to muster all my remaining courage, print some pictures of roughly what I want, and go into a hairdresser with my hair in its natural state so that they can tell me if I'm just dreaming!

i think Kate Humble does curly hair well. She has shorter locks falling onto the side of her foreead, but not a full fringe, in some of these pics.

mathanxiety · 11/11/2010 14:53

The trick with curly hair is to get it cut dry not just after shampooing. Call around and find someone who does dry cuts (this may take a while).

Avoiding horrific frizz can be achieved by using the Curly Girl Method.

Bue · 11/11/2010 16:50

I second the Curly Girl method. I follow it religiously and even splurged on getting my hair cut at the associated salon when I was in NYC. Unfortunately no stylists over here have heard of cutting curly hair dry, and most just aren't very good with curly, TBH.

Can I also second Kate Humble? She has a sort of fringe, and it works.

sapphireblue · 11/11/2010 17:17

Don't go for a fringe. It will stick out at an odd angle.

My hair naturally looks like an 80s perm and there's no way I could have a fringe. Mine is just past shoulder length when pulled straight. I have a layer cut in and it's shaped round my face. Shape is important with curly hair, otherwise you end up with what I call 'triangle hair'....the top of your head is the point of the triangle and the hair is the sides. Not a good look.

ameliameerkat · 11/11/2010 17:27

My hair is wavy/curly and I wear it in a side party with a heavy-ish swept to the side fringe and I like it! I don't straighten my fringe, but I do have to dry it to blow the worst of the curl out. I don't dry the rest of my hair. If I don't dry my fringe it looks awful.
