Call me a snob but this is my style nightmare

Next summer we are attending a "Medieval style" wedding and we have to dress up in Medieval costume.

I'm bloody dreading it! And am a tad annoyed that I no longer have an excuse to buy a nice frock! I've been breastfeeding or pregnant for ages and haven't worn a dress for years.

I think I can cheaply hire a costume for myself but not sure about DH (very tall) or toddler boy.

Sorry, not looking for solutions as such, just a rant!

Poor Pootles. That actually sounds traumatic. But would make a wonderful interlude in a novel. I'm actually surprised it's not in one of the "Bridget Jones" stories.

What a weird thing to do to your wedding guests. But also, weirdly, appealing. I kind of fancy holding a wedding, and insisting on something preposterous, that makes all the invitees really, really miserable. And bouncing around, pretending I'm doing it, because it's such a jolly idea.

Then cackling as I peruse the wedding photos, that have caught the shadow of misery on all their sad, little faces.

(Disclaimer: I wouldn't, ever, actually do it. It's just a weirdly pleasurable thought to imagine.)

Could you buy something from All Saints, in one of their post-apolcalyptic, deconstructed/reconstructed "rags" style? then you might be able to pass yourself off as a sort of C21st-peasant, re-imagined through the lens of techno-SF/fantasy?

Hard work and might annoy the bride, but a conversation-opener and you get to buy a new outfit.

Hire some robes and go as a monk.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 10/11/2010 12:58

not medieval but of that ilk

Jcee · 10/11/2010 12:58

What a nightmare!

I feel your pain, I am still traumatised from the cringe worthy medieval banquet I had to attend as part of a work team building day...

dinkystinky · 10/11/2010 13:08

Could you not wear a simple shift dress and flipflops and go as a serf?

KurriKurri · 10/11/2010 13:16

I think it sounds fun, here are your shoes sorted, now you just need a dress.

I think going as a leper is agreat idea

sue52 · 10/11/2010 13:59

No, you are not a snob at all. Why do people feel the need to inflict their own lack of style and taste on their guests?

Go as a nun, with your DH as a monk - hand in hand Wink

aquavit · 10/11/2010 14:02

armour

I quite fancy the chainmail myself. I wonder if it would be cooler for summer.

aquavit · 10/11/2010 14:05

reckon that the boudicca breastplate here would upstage the bride

especially if you wore the breastplate AND the horned helmet

ricketyrock · 10/11/2010 14:13

weirdly the link doesn't work
anyway its that past times website and there is even a sale on!

YunoYurbubson · 10/11/2010 17:15

Actually, now I'ce seen the frocks I've changed my mind. I want to go to a wedding all swooshy in a velvet princess gown. Blush

YunoYurbubson · 10/11/2010 17:16

These look more authentic but less nice

YunoYurbubson · 10/11/2010 17:18

Or you could go as a medieval pirate?

naturelover · 10/11/2010 17:35

I wouldn't mind but my clothing budget is minuscule, so spending money on a) something I'll wear only once or b) on costume hire, just annoys me. I was really looking forward to having an excuse to buy a dress (I genuinely only have two dresses, both for winter and neither of them fit since I had kids either).
