How to stay REALLY warm and stylish

monkeysmama · 09/11/2010 21:54

I have never worked this out. I love clothes and have a lot of them but when it comes to days when I need to be really warm I never look that good. I can manage in London but I am going away over twice in the next few months and will be spending time walking in forests, by the sea and generally in the cold outdoors. I need to be warm but will be away with lots of other people and I want to look stylish/nice too, damn it.

I have some Uniqlo heath tech tops and am thinking of getting a few of their poloneck and maybe some leggings to wear under things.

I have yet to get a winter coat and am thinking of a proper insulated one (I've only looked at North Face so far)

Any helpful suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Good, waterproof boots, thick socks, simple thermal underwear and cashmere scarf and gloves.
No idea re coat as I have yet to see a warm and stylish coat for sale!

monkeysmama · 09/11/2010 22:03

Thanks Pannacotta. Any good boot suggestions? I have Blush Hunters with a sheepskin lining but have been thinking about getting some proper warm ones.

What do you wear over your thermals? Jeans?

This is how.

You'll be toasty warm, just a little uncomfortable due to the internal organs you've had to sell in order to buy it.

Pannacotta · 09/11/2010 22:09

I am still on the lookout for warm boots.
Ecco do some waterproof, lined boots which look quite nice but the local shop doesnt stock them and I dont like buying shoes/boots online. Will try and find a link.

When its very cold I wear thin leggings as thermals combined with simple M&S thermal tops (ie not white and mumsy). Jeans or ideally cords over the top.

Thermal or long socks help too and a wide scarf.

monkeysmama · 09/11/2010 22:10

Oh Tethersend that is stunning. A tad over budget though. I'd be scared to wear it!

Here are the boots I was thinking of

tethersend · 09/11/2010 22:18

Pannacotta · 09/11/2010 22:21

I'd want two sheep for that price!
Sorry to have spellt your name wrong btw.

tethersend · 09/11/2010 22:24

Oh God, don't worry about that...

...actually, I think I'd want the whole flock.

monkeysmama · 10/11/2010 08:48

I can vouch for the knee high socks. Discovered them this year. Heat tech tops are good but I don't really find them warm enough. Might check out M&S thermals.

monkeysmama · 10/11/2010 10:22

I have some M&S thermals from last year and some fluffy knee high socks too. I am on the right path then.

Regarding a hat, my ear get very cold very quickly so I usually wear ear muffs!

As far as I recall, a ewe lamb costs about £70. So you could indeed get a flock for that price!

FreeButtonBee · 10/11/2010 10:34

M&S aturograpgh Cashmere tights - warm woooly tights that don't look like warm wooly tights.

You need a down filled coat as well - Zara have good ones. I have one from last year and it means I can wear a fine knit jumper underneath and take off the coat indoors so still look stylish.

I think a matching hat and scarf is nice - add matching gloves and you look like a Tie Rack advert so don't go too matchy matchy. The nice soft beanie hats that are around at the moment are lovely.

Boots - important that they have good thick soles or else the cold just seeps through the bottom.

For ultimate warmth brora cashmere dresses are the dog's bollocks.

thehairybabysmum · 10/11/2010 10:36

You need the Aigle Everywarm jacket....tis fab fab fab and super toasty.

ill try and find a link

thehairybabysmum · 10/11/2010 10:41

here

Amazing boots

Warm as toast, take your pick. Mine are the older version of the first ones. Mmmmm. Have had them four years and with a quick brush off, they look as good as the day I bought them (mind you, I didn't spend £235 on them - if you shop around suspect you would find similar cheaper.)

Just DON'T get Dubarry granny boots.

aquavit · 10/11/2010 10:47

Cashmere, as good as you can afford - jumpers, hats, scarves, gloves, dresses... Very warm for not too much bulk (and so delicious to wear).

Long socks and thermal leggings/long johns under trousers. Gap have some lovely very long, thick ribbed socks at the moment. Legwarmers too if you like - over or under your boots and trousers.

I wear mid-calf leather biker boots at the moment and can fit lots of lovely snuggly sock and legwarmer under them. Sheepskin insoles are very nice too.

monkeysmama · 10/11/2010 10:50

Thanks for the suggestions. I have some sheepskin insoles I wear in my wellies which are lovely.

I really, really like the Aigle coat. Am going to find somewhere that has it in stock. Thanks very much!

OP posts:
monkeysmama · 10/11/2010 11:44

Ah so nowhere has the black aigle in stock in a 12. Damn.

thehairybabysmum · 12/11/2010 09:27

Ill have a look for you too...it is the best coat ever!

What about a size 14....being french it is not the roomiest fit in the world, mine is a 14 and i am a 12/14 size....depends if youare a small 12 or a large 12 i reckon. Plus dont forget you wear it over thicker clothers being winter.

thehairybabysmum · 12/11/2010 09:35

this is the 2010 replacement model....still nice and will be as warm no doubt.
