fly london boots - how long should they last? or any boots for that matter...

i got a pair for christmas last year and have already worn through the back of them. you know when you get those two little holes that stones get in so you jangle when you walk? actually, i am really disappointed. when i think about it, i wore them 5 or 6 months max as i don't wear boots when it is warmer. they cost 120 quid! i just thought they would last longer. also as they aren't waterproof i don't wear them everyday.

how long do you think boots should last?

i do really love the style and fit of them so am gutted that i now need to find other boots that i love as much.

can anyone recommend any boots that are like these but will last a bit longer?

also, why would you make boots in this style and NOT make them waterproof?

Fly Mol: worst boot ever. And really not cheap. I have nubuck russell&bromley boots which cost a bit more, that I've been wearing for 5 years.

I love fly shoes but always find they only last a few months before the sole, especially on the rubber soled ones, wears through to the air holes. I've stopped buying them as it wasn't worth it really. I've had some Clarks boots that have finally worn through after 4 years. I've been looking for a replacement but having studied the soles on them they seem thinner and less substantial. Maybe I'm fussy but I expect a pair of boots costing me £120 to last at least 2 winters.

BooBooGlass · 08/11/2010 10:16

You can get them resoled I would have thought.
Thta said, I have a pair of tall brown Timberland riding style boots that are on their 5th winter. I've had the zip replaced, and really should resole them this year, but they have been worth every penny. The only thing stopping me gettign Fly boots are the terrible things I've read on MN, which is a real shame. I think the Dr Marten calf length zipped ones look liek they'd last

I have a pair of boots from Dune that have lasted 3 years and counting....

WhatsWrongWithYou · 08/11/2010 10:20

I knew you'd be talking about Fly boots. Fly meh more like.
I bought mine late last winter and they let in water straight away, which was a total bummer as I decided to sacrifice looks (they're hideously ugly, IMO) for practicality at a reasonable price.

I had Timberlands for three years before that, which cost £150 and were pretty basic-looking but waterproof and long-lasting. I feel like just wearing wellies for the school run and sticking to pretty footwear otherwise.

I got the patent Fly ankle boots last winter, and at first they looked great and were v comfy. But within a few weeks the patent stuff started to peel off and look crap - not what I expected for £90.

They are annoying. I was told they couldn't sole/heel those rubber ones either.

devilsadvocaat · 08/11/2010 10:38

oh blimey! thanks for all your responses. haven't seen anything negative on mn. in fact never heard of them until i saw everyone raving about them on mn.

it is so annoying. it seems like everything i buy recently is really disappointing.

I bought Fly Mol a couple of weeks ago and although they're really comfortable they're already looking completely nailed. How in the name of arse do you clean them? They're that kind of soft, oily leather that marks the second you touch them, so I'm not sure if ordinary boot polish is the thing.

(Didn't know about the soles being rubbish too...)

higgle · 08/11/2010 13:10

My plain black Gabor boots with a small heel are 10 years old this winter and still OK - not worn heavilly and notthe height of fashion but really well made. Boots should last at least 3 years imo

MuseumMum · 23/03/2011 11:16

I have just complained to the website I bought my Fly Mol boots from (in April last year, so they're not even a year old yet), as the zip has broken on one boot and the soles are coming off on both. Only complained because a friend of mine with the same boots said exactly the same thing had happened to her. And now I see all these complaints too! I wish I'd known before -it's a shame, I really love the boots, but the quality is so poor. Has anyone been successful in getting a refund? I feel a bit ripped off....

HooverTheHamaBeads · 23/03/2011 11:33

I would send the boots back if the soles have worn through like that.

I bought some summer shoes last year from Next where the same thing happened, a sharp stone pierced through the crepe/rubber sole and I had a collection of pebbles rattling around in there. Took them back, told them soles were faulty/poor quality and got full refund in cash.

Goldberry · 23/03/2011 11:38

Orlando - you can get cleaning stuff specifically for that waxy, 'snuffed' leather - I think Clarks sell it. You just rub it in with a cloth and it makes them look all lovely again. Don't use normal shoe polish! I'm a bit Shock to hear about the soles though.

Northumberlandlass · 23/03/2011 12:32

I have a pair on DM Riders that lasted 13 years (not kidding). I bought a pair of knee high 20 hole DM's last summer £120, as an investment. I know they will last me for years & years...

lucykate · 23/03/2011 12:58

i have quite a few pairs of fly shoes and boots. am happy with mine BUT i've only ever bought in the sale and really cheap prices, my mols were £40, would be very annoyed if i'd paid full price.

melissa1972 · 23/03/2015 18:27

What a disgrace!!! I purchased a pair of fly boots, on the 10th December last year and 12 weeks in and the rubber sole is hanging off at the side paid £120.00 from Amazon who state you only have a 30 day money back guarantee, totally disgusting DONT TOUCH THEM WITH A BARGE POLE..Total waste of money, they only look nice..
