Please help me choose my engagement ring; choice of two!

engagement ring help! Please! If you had to choose, which of these two would it be?

I need to decide by tomorrow. I've got a choice between two as technically we purchased one, but then I had second thoughts! The shop owner is holding them both for me. I'm not a diamond fan.

I've found pictures that are pretty good apprioximates of the two i'm comparing

Looks like this on: www.myjewelrysource.com/images/garnet_rings/gr8035-garnet-ring-3.jpg
but more this round shape: www.bodyjewelryocean.com/diamond/14kwhitegolddiamondrhodolitegarnetring.html

It's marquise shape like this: www.la-scala.co.uk/a-marquise-cut-aquamarine-and-diamond-ring-18-carat-gold-p-42.html

I want a stunning ring that looks classy, elegant and worth every penny, but isn't a classic engagement ring gem!

The garnet one is beautiful.

catinthehat2 · 07/11/2010 17:04

STW - have you thought about wedding rings later on? Might not be relevant, but the wider the shape, the less snug the WR will be, unless it's really lifted off the finger by the setting. And the higher the setting, the more likely it is to get bashed about. THe Aqua marquise shape looks as if it would push a w/r away.

So it might be the shape will influence you as well.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/11/2010 17:05

I can't really say either, because they aren't my thing at all, but have you tried wedding rings alongside either of them?

My engagement ring is a princess (square) cut diamond on a plain platinum band, and even so it wasn't straightforward to get a wedding ring to sit smoothly alongside it.

I agree with MadameCastafiore about white gold as well - it really isn't robust enough for a ring that you will be wearing every day for the rest of your life.

purplepeony · 07/11/2010 17:10

I disagree about the white gold.

My BF had a ring made- money no object lucky thing- and has white gold. It is a combined engaement and wedding ring- looks more like an eternity ring, with baguette diamonds on a half hoop of white gold. she wears it every day all day even for gardening ( with gloves) but wahses up ect with it- adn 22 years later itis as good as new.

icapturethecastle · 07/11/2010 17:15

Number 2 - I love aquamarines.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/11/2010 17:17

I have a solitaire ruby. Dark red - not pink. It is fabulous, and cost about as much as a diamond of equivalent size Hmm. Always wanted a ruby, rather than a diamond.

The two stones are so different - have quite different feels. Which is probably why people are strongly one or the other. Or none Grin

Is it the style you love, rather than the stone?

MmeLindt · 07/11/2010 17:26

Actually, I do agree with MmeCastafiore. Neither ring says "engagement ring" to me, probably because wearing a wedding ring would be difficult next to them.

My engagement ring is similar to yours, Mme but yellow gold. Actually, it is my second ring, the first one was exactly the same style though and I have had it over 18 years. Very classic style.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/11/2010 17:27

Also agree that if you can't decide, then you haven't found the right ring. Keep looking!

phipps · 07/11/2010 17:30

My engagement ring is 2 diamonds on a twist setting. My wedding ring was cut to sit snuggly next to it.

NomDePlume · 07/11/2010 17:31

2 for me, but my engagement ring is a marquise cut solitaire, so I would say that!

I also prefer the more delicate colour of the stone. I think the red one looks a bit tacky.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/11/2010 17:31

Do you ever wear your wedding ring by itself?

rachk32 · 07/11/2010 17:41

i love the second one. X

KenDoddsDadsDog · 07/11/2010 17:44

Number 2. Love acquamarines too. Prefer The style in The second picture though.

MooMooFarm · 07/11/2010 17:51

I think once you find the ring for you, you won't need to ask other people's opinions! Smile

janeywane · 08/11/2010 13:30

I love numgber 2 The Marquise ring the Best!
