Home hair colouring - which brand to go for?

I have dark brown hair with very little grey, but fancy a bit of a change and want to dye it a shade of mahogany.

With so many brands to choose from, which ones do you find work best? Also any pointers on how to use them would be great!

i like the bright 'live' ones,i've used them for years.
my mum goes brown and nice and easy is thee best for coverage on her hair.

its much easier to do if you can get a friend or family member to help,but if not, i start at the top,put a little on and rub in with your fingers (using gloves) and keep going til its all covered,then i use baby wipes to wipe off any excess on ears/hairline/forehead. once the time is up i shower off,

if you can,do it when your hair is as dirty as possible,as the colour takes better,

I have fair hair that I dye blonde and find the L'Oreal Casting Gloss great

ten minute something or other? It's quick, cheap and effective

anyone else before I take the plunge?

My dd has dyed her hair Mahogany using Casting by L'Oreal. It looks great!

Daniel Field colours have the advantage of not smelling of anything much at all, and no mixing apart from adding water. V easy and good natural coverage.

So, I've bought a l'oreal casting creme gloss and once I've applied it, I'm supposed to just rinse til the water runs clear after 20 mins. IS THIS RIGHT???? I thought you had to shampoo our the colour? Please help!

yep that sounds right.

i use nice n easy and i leave it in for a fortnight (or it feels that way) to colour in my super strong white hair

If you try and rinse out till the water runs clear you will be there for a fortnight!

I find it takes at least two or three shampoos for the water to run clear, so usually shampoo and condition straight after colouring to get the worst of it out.

I used Excell 10 Natural Brown colour and am now Cruella de Ville's twin. Never again!

I use Garnier Nutrisse bit have tried most of them, they're all fine but darker on your hair than you think so get a shade lighter.

Garnier Nutrisse, I agree. I like the chocolate brown. I dont find it too dark.

I want to be (and am now) dark blonde, but I use ash beige blonde to achieve that and it's much lighter on the box. I'm light brown naturally so not really dark.
I've not tried any of the darker or redder shades though, just the light browns and lighter, until I got as light as I wanted.

I've used most of the big brands and they're all fine (Nice 'n' Easy, L'Oreal Excellence, etc). You might need to try a few different ones to get a shade you're happy with.

And I always rinse first, then two or even three shampoos and conditioner. Don't do it on a night you're going out though, as I find it takes at least one more wash to get all the residue out, and get the full benefit of the colour/shine.

Lucky you not having much grey - should be easy to dye.
