hair highlights, how long do they last?

Hello

I am feeing rubbish about myself and have been pondering whether I should get highlights in my hair. I have fairly long brown hair with a hint of a natural wave, it is in excellent condition. But I am feeling fat and drab at the moment and thought hightlights might somehow give me a boost. I am thinking a suble hint of auburn...

But...I am worried about having them and not being able to afford to maintain them, and also what happens when I want to get rid of them, they don't jus fade away do they? Would I have to have my hair dyed to get them out?

i had them about 15 years ago and stuggled to keep them up but I wondered if things have moved on since then?

I have subtle highlights and get them done 2 or 3 times a year, they don't fade away so if you no longer wanted them you would either have to grow out or have an all over semi permanent colour to cover whilst they grow out.

You can start with just a few and then if you decide you want to keep them have more added. It really depends on how subtle and how quickly your hair grows as to how often you will need them doing.

Have a consultation (should be free) and discuss with the colourist, you may be able to have a glossing treatment to give you a shine boost if you are undecided about the highlights.

Would agree, if they are subtle then you don't have to worry about roots etc and touching up so often.

I don't think the upkeep would be as bad as you think with darker hair.
Also having a few layers in addition to your wave would make regrowth less noticeable.
If you don't like them you can cover them with a semi or permanent (at a salon though first time).

Go for it.

I had mine done in August, just a shade lighter than my hair with a few ash ones hidden in amongst it, it was really subtle but its lasted, just starting to look like it needs doing again 3 months isn't bad I think! The only thing that I'd do differently is make sure the stylist knows I put my hair up because I look like a badger when I have a ponytail!! Blush

thank you. good point about the badger, wouldn't have thought of that and I do wear my hair up.

still haven't made the appointment but have booked myself in for a facial tomorrow for the first time in years so that is a start!

will probably go for the highlights, maybe closer to christmas as I'll be seeing some family for the first time in years. thanks again for replying.

Could always try a semi permenant tint in a wwrm chesnut or deeper red - will add lots of shine and also bring out natural higlights and fade gradually - - you can have low lights done in semi permanant which will fade naturally if you are afraid of upkeep

The tint you can do DIY as well so pretty cheap :)
