Maternity tights - recommendations?

NorkilyChallenged · 03/11/2010 15:33

Somehow this wasn't an issue in my previous pregnancies (maybe I just wore trousers all the time, I can't remember) but I need some maternity tights. Ideally thick ones (like 60 denier or maybe woolly ones) to get me through winter. Don't know where to start looking.

I hate waistbands at the best of times so ideally would want something with a really stretchy/gentle/comfy waistband rather than a normal, diggy-in, painful one. Any ideas? I am a maternity tight idiot.

Thank you!

Don't go near Next ones! They fall down!
Boots do them and topshop do/did.

Excellent, thank you, ideas of what to avoid is perfect!

Top shop.... mmmm... hadn't thought of there!

Just checked on their website and they do 80 and 120 denier ones. Their maternity basics range is fab. Really good leggings, vests etc.

Concur re Topshop. I had them for my last pregnancy and they were the best; thick, over the bump and didn't fall down!!!!

Hello Norkily!

How's it all going? how far along are you now?

Not sure where you are, but if you can make it to somewhere that stocks formes maternity tights, they are sublime. I discovered them at 81/2 months pg and am saving them Wink

They have thick wooly ones which are the best.

There is a shop in Covent Garden.

Otherwise, mothercare's weren't bad.

Hi Tethers. Awaiting dating scan to be sure but am about 11-12 weeks now. And somehow bursting out of all my normal clothes already (it's not baby, so I'm scared to think what it is. Pies probably).

Formes, am not in London (in Cambridge) but remember having a Formes catalogue once upon a time.

Hearing good things about Mothercare so am going to try those I think.

Aww, that's lovely Smile

Good luck with tights and enjoy the scan.

roary · 03/11/2010 22:17

Could you just wear regular tights? I did. It depends a bit on where you stand with comfort on under bump or over bump clothes. I didn't really like anything over bump and just wore regular tights both pregnancies. Sometimes I sized up but more often didn't need to.

NorkilyChallenged · 04/11/2010 08:41

No, roary, I don't really like normal tights at the best of times and have to roll them down over my hips as I hate waistbands. I'm def more an over-bump than under-bump kind of person with maternity clothes.

Tethers - am obsessing about tights as am totally papping it about the scan for some reason. Will be glad when tomorrow comes...

Last year I had some fantastic ones from M& S. They were non maternity but amazingly comfy and so stretchy. They were stripey- don't know how you feel about stripes?
Had a quick look online, these look similar ish

skandi1 · 04/11/2010 09:15

mamas & papas. I spent ages with pregnant with DD looking for maternity tights.

The only opaque ones which stayed up and were really comfy were M&Ps (not an M&P fan generally as their service is shoddy).

Don't know about now but they had different colours inc purple (a nice classy purple, not garish) and brown which I just couldn't find anywhere else.

And they are overbump.

Whitethorn · 04/11/2010 09:16

M&S Do Maternity ones and they are fine, do the job and dont rip and wash well

NorkilyChallenged · 04/11/2010 09:16

Oh thanks Tobermory and skandi1, I will do some online investigating and order some pairs this weekend! Great to get some recommendations Grin

Forgot to say, the M& S ones I had were over bump, and my bump was bloomin huge so they had a lot of stretching to do! Ive worn them since have DD2, and am amazed that they seem to have magically pinged back into some sort of shape.

Elemental · 04/11/2010 10:14

The best ones for me were H&M but they weren't always in stock.

chandellina · 04/11/2010 10:58

i just wore normal ones - are maternity ones really different?

NorkilyChallenged · 04/11/2010 11:36

I imagine the maternity ones accommodate the fact that my tummy is already 3 sizes bigger than the rest of me and still growing Grin [hopeful]

Also hate anything tight on my bump during pregnancy so need something that doesn't stop halfway up with tight waistband.

Have you tried www.globalmaternity.com. That's where I got mine - 60 denier purple ones. They also have ink blue, chocolate, black and other colours but I can't remember!

maninthemooncup · 05/11/2010 08:14

Another vote for M&P, they are nice and soft and wash well. I had some cute patterned ones from Topshop but didn't think their plain ones were as good as M&P.

Topshop were my allround saviour though, the vests and stretchy skirts got me through - I just bought cheap "normal" tops a size or two up to wear on top. One word of caution, Topshop maternity leggings and bump bands are HUGE, I couldn't wear mine until about 6/7 months as they wouldn't stay up, so if you buy them you might want to go down a size.
