Hair straightening-Yuko, Brazilian, IHR..................

I am fed up straightening my hair every time I wash it and want to take the plunge and go for the permanent straightening.
Just not sure which type of straightening to go for. Can any mums who've taken the plunge guide me a little bit?

my friend had yuko done, v spensive but looked fab - however she's just bought a house, can't afford to get it done again and now has curly roots - weird!

trixymalixy · 02/11/2010 19:51

Brazilian doesn't straighten your hair it just makes it less frizzy and easier to manage. You still have to straighten it.

tyaca · 02/11/2010 20:46

i yuko'd three times. years back, pre-kids, when i had cash...

i wouldn't recommend. very pricey, and while it does last forever, you get curly roots so quickly that you need to get it redone in 3-4 months anyway. which is the same as you'd do with the cheaper semi-permanent options. also, it was too straight. i was used to the bounce and movement of blown-straight hair, and i felt like a bit of a helmet head with it straightened so harshly.

i'd go for brazilian. my sister has much curlier hair than me and gets it brazilianed. it looks ace. smooth and wavy when left to dry naturally, and she can blow dry it straight in 5min (would be 30m normally). much less damaging to your hair too.

good luck! very jealous...

I have had Yuko and IHR and of the two would recommend IHR, but you do have to keep it up (I have it done about once every 10 months with serious regrowth). My hair is naturally wavy, rather than curly so the roots although a little strange don't look terrible. But the straightened hair will ALWAYS be straight unless you have it cut out and it does limit what you can do for nights out, i.e. curls won't hold, etc. But it has made my life much much easier so I would still always say go for it if you can afford the regrowth. Once it is done after a week or so the helmet hair look disappears.

Its great to hear all your experiences. My biggest thing is my hair just frizzes up and goes bonkers in the slightest rain drizzle or humidity. I always straighten but wonder how I'd feel if I had no other option but straight?

Also does the Brazilian deal with frizz and hold against the elements ? Confused

um, don't know re element-proof. sorry Smile.

if i were you, i would def try the brazilian first cause of it being so much cheaper. also, all the reputable salons offer it now which i would see as a good sign whereas yuko/ihr never really caught on.

my guess would be that none of the treatments will be perfect but at least brazilian not going to bankrupt you and lay waste to the condition of your hair. i had split ends with three of fours ends coming away....

dipsymummy · 04/11/2010 00:35

see your point.

My hairdresser is charging £150 for brazilian plus £30 for products, which is more then I expected considering I have above the shoulder length hair.

considering I'm going to be his first client for this I thought he might do a dealSad

done it twice (yuko), was good for 2-3 weeks then i needed to blow dry on top. Ruined the texture and never altered how it hung or swished and so never trlu looked straight.

So I went over to the curly side and best bit is it makes you look thinner as your hair has volume instead of being spapped to your skull and so balances out your proportion

iTigress · 04/11/2010 07:52

Shop around for Brazilian - all lovely of you to be faithful
to your hairdresser, but you'll find it cheaper elsewhere, I'm sure I've seen it for closer to £100.

Also Yuko is like a perm, it is very damaging to your hair and IMO looks very weird and fake. Brazilian adds keratin to your hair and actually thickens it and improves the condition. Much better option for you I'd think - I also have dry, fluffy hair which I coax into a gleaming poker-straight thing of beauty every morning so considering Brazilian myself Hmm Only thing is that it's supposed to be quite addictive as it's so good, so can get v expensive!

I just had Brazilian done at Toni and Guy last week, as am about to have a baby and I know I won't have time for endless straightening.

For me, it is AMAZING. I wash my hair and it is straight, shiny, lovely! BUT while my hair is very curly, it is very thin. So I don't need to straighten. Thicker hair might still need it.

It was 175 quid but worth it

bigkidsmademe · 04/11/2010 11:36

oh and I got caught in the rain and when I got home it brushed out straight!

THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME

seriously

sansucre · 04/11/2010 11:56

^^ I thought the same thing, and am still taken aback that when I go out in the rain, my hair no longer goes all frizzy!

trixymalixy · 04/11/2010 12:26

Yip , Brazilian definitely protects against the elements. My hair used to go into a big ball of frizz in the rain, and it still amazes me too that it doesn't anymore.

minibmw2010 · 04/11/2010 13:07

IHR definitely helps the condition of your hair (although there is no getting away from the fact its a quite harsh process). My hair is always in much better condition after its done, soaks up the water when you are drying it (which is why it dries so quickly) and never gets frizzy. I have it done at a salon in Covent Garden and the hairdresser said there is usually someone in at all times having it done (IHR takes about 4 hours on medium to long hair). I think its a very word of mouth thing as its very specialist and therefore not something that just your average hairdresser can do.

dipsymummy · 04/11/2010 14:04

I like! I like! All these positive comments have really spurred me on!
I'm going to go for the Brazilian.

Are any of you lovely ladies near TWickenham/Richmond?kingston -if yes can you divulg the salon you had it done at?

I had it in Toni and Guy in Clapham, just down from the junction, so a short train ride away from you?

dipsymummy · 04/11/2010 23:50

Its not bad at all and thankyou Smile. Do you remember the name of your stylist?

oops!
still swaying towards the permanent straightening.

has anyone had any experience with this salon?

OP posts:
minibmw2010 · 11/11/2010 20:28

Never heard of that salon, but this is where I went for mine, its called Colour Nation and the person who did it is called Brad.

I have also heard good things about the Brazilian (and this salon do that also), but I have heard that if your hair is quite strong or thick it may not be a strong enough process.

dipsymummy · 12/11/2010 14:31

Thanks for that minibmw2010.

That salon has come up a fair bit on my searches .

I was hoping to find somewhere a bit nearer to me to work around my kids school runs . May just wait it out until Jan when my little one is at school till 3.

I guess its prob better to wait until its not a rainy spell considering the hair cant be we for 3 daysConfused
