Help me help my DH...

...who, like me, rarely indulges in new clothes for himself (because there's always something else to do, and we're on a budget) and has a frightening number of hand-me-downs from his dad. During the week, he dresses in black or grey suits, TM Lewin shirts and nice ties (though the weekends are another story - then, he pretty much lives in the same fleece, or else a jumper my mum got him for Christmas two years ago) but I'd like to get him one or two pieces for Christmas to help jazz/sophisticate things up a little. A young-but-sharp jacket, perhaps (to replace the dreaded fleece and thin long coat that won't be warm enough in a few weeks' time) - or indeed anything else that springs to mind?

He's 34, not super tall (5'8'' or so) but quite slim (lovely legs, fending off the teensiest hint of a belly) and works in a school - so although he has to be 'smart', I don't see that he needs to dress like a bank manager, either.

All suggestions would be hugely appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

bump?

I've started looking at Uniqlo's pea/bomber jackets, and Gap's jumpers/rubgy shirts, if that's any help...

Also, what's the consensus on cordouroys?

What about a Barbour (new style, quite trendy now) or if want cheaper (and not obv barbour connotations Wink) Jack Murphy do a similar style. Dark wash jeans are smarter than regular jeans, cords bit old-man ish IMO. Unless worn with grandad style cardi on young trendy chap. Fat face nice for seaters/tops (if avoid anything with huge logos). My DP & his brothers adore Superdry too.

Cheers, arfa! I'll check those out...

I've been wondering the exact same thing about my DH, need to sophisticate him up a bit. He loves big ugly logos and seems to live in light coloured jeans and shapeless old jumpers and fleeces. He has some nice jumpers that I/family have given him but he thinks they're too dressy. Any alternative to jeans if corduroys are old-man-ish? He has brown jeans but, again, seldom wears them because "they're too dressy." So watching this thread with interest....looking forward to checking out any links (hint, hint) Grin

ChateauMargot · 01/11/2010 13:01

Iwilldothis, I also get the 'too dressy' complaint. Am guilty of it myself, if I'm honest! Time for a wardrobe clearout so that there's nothing left to wear but the nice stuff...

Fat face sweater here, IMO anything hooded that isn't coat/jacket is out for over 35ish, unless bloke is esp young looking
Jack Murphy wax jacket here

Are you me OP? Same here - husband a teacher also! Dont want anything too sophisticated and in many ways would be good to have suggestions for a whole outfit rather than just one bit (which would probably look a bit odd with the rest of his Sainsburys clothes Wink )

ChateauMargot · 01/11/2010 14:55

msbunbury, I'm glad I'm not alone! You're right about suggesting a whole outfit, though. DH tends to resort to M&S black suits, M&S black shoes, and 'safe' shirts - which is totally fine (and suits our budget), but I just can't help but feel that he could use a little something to rejeuvenate his 'look'...

Thanks everyone for the links....some nice stuff there. Will have to work on this....

My DH was the same after we had our 2 DC. I don't think he bought anything for about 3 years! He is a civil servant so wear the obligatory dark grey M&S suit for work.

Weekends tends to be relaxed dark denim jeans - He tends to go for GAP or branded ones in the John Lewis sale

He has some nice casual shirts (Plain and stripe and floral) that he has picked up in GAP, H&M, John Lewis (sale again) and Boden (sale) - DH is a tax inspector and does not like paying over the odds for things Wink

He also has some nice jumpers - lambswool, cashmere - from M&S, John Lewis
He has a couple of North Face hoodies that are good for outdoors things

His biggest purchase was a Ralph Lauren parker style winter coat - It was over £200 but he has had it a couple of years now and is still going strong and I guess a coat is an investment buy
