floral print dresses

Not summer skimpy ones -talking about the ones with sleeves - probably meant for wearing with cardi, boots, opaques etc.
Am drawn to these but can never decide what is frumpy and what is not.
Are there any golden rules? I am not naturally stylish and need guidance.

I don't think you can go wrong with what you've mentioned Smile

MrsC2010 · 31/10/2010 19:58

I have this in saddle, much nicer in the flesh.

Also this.

Lovely thick jersey, much better than Boden this year IMO.

Great for layering.

newlurker · 02/11/2010 12:41

Mrs C - I like both dresses, thank you.

The reservation i have about floral prints - is that I had some elderly relatives who used to wear them. Aslo once worked with some mature ladies who were nicknamed the "band of florals" by the younger staff.

Clearly I fear looking like Auntie Brenda or a "floral" - but so lacking in confidence about the dividing line.

Is is skirt length? The size/colour of the print? Soem other magic formula?

Maybe some stores are better than others.

I do floral print dresses + cardi, tights, boots.

Wear a long cardi - then some of the print is covered and it's not too overpowering. I always think go for small prints - but then I am quite petite (short...) and I have a friend who does floral dresses in large prints & looks good.

Go for shortish length - above the knee definitely. You need to show some leg between hem and boot. But don't show any bum either. Get thick tights and you'll be less worried about this!

Wear vest/t-shirt underneath.

stirlingstar · 02/11/2010 14:44

Zara have got some nice ones in - they are a bit cheapy, but would give you a chance to try out the look?

higgle · 02/11/2010 15:16

simply the best I had this dress in both last year's colourways, but had to sell one when I lost weight, it is lovely, much admired and always gets lots of good reviews, you can buy tights and matching thermals to wear underneath on the site and the georgeous writwarmers too.

higgle · 02/11/2010 15:22

"wrist warmers" "writwarmers" are for lawyers
not S&B babes.

Heartsease · 02/11/2010 15:48

I dress like this about half the time agree that it's best if the dresses are shortish. I think interesting woolly tights also help you dodge the frump factor. Be sure your jewellery isn't too small and twee also that can tip a person onto the wrong side of vicar's wife.

Meggles76 · 02/11/2010 20:46

Lovely dresses, MrsC. I am loving Joules this season - agree they have doen better than Boden this time.

I would wear floral dresses with funky coloured tights and trendy shoes / boots to avpid the granny look

Bonsoir · 02/11/2010 20:51

I currently want this dress

NinkyNonker · 02/11/2010 21:12

I agree Meggles. I have some really cool (IMO!) burgundy tights that I wear under the first dress with the same coloured scoop neck tee under. (Also dark green, purple, navy...) Mainly with ankle boots at the mo (these as I can't find any knee high ones I like.

overmydeadbody · 02/11/2010 21:20

I just ordered this. Don't think it could be mistaken for a mature lady's floral dress or a granny dress!

higgle · 03/11/2010 11:33

No longer new but one of my favourite outfits is a Cath Kidston floral dress with a Brora Thermal top underneath and a Howie's wool top that is not a hoodie but hoodie shaped over the top - worn with purple tights and embroidered cowboy boots (they were Brora too) no mistaking me for a granny!

notinmypocket · 03/11/2010 12:58

overmydeadbody - I like the web site you link to, Joe Browns.

Did you/anyone get anything from there before? Are they any good or does it just look good on the web?

NanasInJamas · 03/11/2010 13:02

overmydeadbody- oooh, I just got that dress this morning! It's lovely.

notinmypocket- I find Joe Brown's a bit variable. The sizing is usually huge (apart from the bust, weirdl). The crinkle dresses tend to add about 20 pounds; they are horribly flared over the hips. However, the knitted tunics and jumpers/sweater dresses are nice and pretty good quality.

notinmypocket · 03/11/2010 13:41

Thanks Nanas - I'll stay well away from the crinkle dresses!

sandytoes79 · 03/11/2010 14:25

I can't see that Joe Browns one- is it sold out?? Can someone describe said dress to me so I can try and look on website for it, really wanting a nice printed dress this winter- Thanks!

NanasInJamas · 03/11/2010 15:06

sandytoes: will try and link to Great Univesral: that's where I got mine from. It's a lovely, sofy cord-type material. Maybe baby cord? Beautiful, subtle red.

Retro dress

NanasInJamas · 03/11/2010 15:07

Ack, Great Universal. My typing!

sandytoes79 · 03/11/2010 15:19

Oh yes I like that very much! And wasn't really what I was looking for but love those colours and the idea of baby cord. Does it have brown in it near bottom? Quite hard to tell colour. Trying to work out what cardy and boots would go with?

Thanks Nanas for linking so quickly!

notinmypocket · 03/11/2010 15:32

I like it too but not sure if it would suit biggish norks?

NanasInJamas · 03/11/2010 15:48

No brown, sorry- dark greens, purple and blue. It's not quite baby cord but very soft.

Not sure about boots: I have some brown ones that might do the trick (flat). Also have some nice red Clarks shoes but they're a bit matchy-matchy and twee.

Am norkily-challenged so no idea if it would suit bigger ones, sorry!

Can I say I really hate that expression ?connotations of women as meat. If anyone uses it in front of me I feel like slapping them.
However there is no doubt that after a certain age there are probably things you should steer clear of. Just curious to know what you wise women think are the worse possible mistakes.
Me, I can?t think of any hard and fast rules. But I?m sure there must be some. Oh guide us to that happy place between dressing too young and looking (whispers) mumsy.

headinclouds101 · 12/11/2010 13:44

Ooops that was meant to be a new post - ignore.

Does anyone know how to remove a post you have made in error - this has happened to me before and I could not work it out.

moragbellingham · 12/11/2010 13:56

click on the report button and send to MNHQ, they are usually very obliging!
