when you have friends round for dinner do you use different plates/cutlery?

have just been moaning to dh that we don't have 'nice' stuff to bring out when we have friends round
not that it's a posh dinner party but still , would be nice

i love plain White but my favourite is Vintage stuff lovely patterns and flowers got fab brand new 70s cutlery from charity shop a few weeks ago.I left a vintage t set in charity shop in Edinburgh today after i had paid for it /I live miles away. sigh

We use regular plain white Ikea plates but have special serving dishes, glasses and proper napkins I save for dinner parties. We don't have space for an extra set.
