So whats a "going out" outfit then?

I have no clothes for "going out" of a weekend. I have work clothes, dresses for occasions and casual wear - but if I had to "dress up" to go out this very minute, I wouldn't have anything! I do have a great pair of jeans though so am looking for your advice as to something to wear with these jeans, I think that would be my "going out" look.

I am size 10 in tops and have been told "structured" clothes look better on me! (In early 40s if thats a factor!)

I personally love a silk shirt tucked in and finished with a belt. Just a bit less predictable than the ubiquitous tunic top. Depends on waist/hip/muffin top issues of course!sort of like this

SerendipityAlways · 30/10/2010 15:53

Thanks olderandwiser, I was afraid I was talking to myself there for a while!!

Yes I know what you mean by the tunic tops - I have finally decided they're not for me, just make me look shapeless. Thanks for your help!

I do think a nice silk or satin top could be v. nice - any more suggestions?

How about something like this with your jeans and a black or grey blazer? Or do you need a slightly lower neckline?

SerendipityAlways · 30/10/2010 16:11

Yes BeligerentG, like your style, anything else?

I often think Warehouse is a place I need to spend lots of time in and try on everything

Serendipity, I had exactly the sale thought when I went out a few weeks ago... and most of the mums I was out with said they felt the same!

I think slim dark jeans and heels look good. A silk top looks good with them - I have a couple of nice pussy bow ones - probably work better on those of us without huge norks! A blazer can finish the outfit off nicely.

I have also been lusting after some slim fit black satin trousers. Again I would wear with heels (but I am onlt 5ft). I think a crisp white shirt would look nice with them.

Warehouse has some nice dresses in at the moment that would be good for a night out

BelligerentGhoul · 30/10/2010 17:57

I went to the pub last night (I don't usually get out much!) and wore:

denim mini
grey tights
brown knee high boots
floral silk camisole
grey slouchy cardigan

I felt fine but nearly every other woman in there was wearing black trousers and a coloured or black top.

NannyPatsSausagePlait · 30/10/2010 17:58

New look have a fab velvet ruched sleeved blazer in sale, over a little vest top that woudl look nice on night out

hang on

NannyPatsSausagePlait · 30/10/2010 17:59

I am considering this. Skinnies, and shoe boots. Mebbe

BelligerentGhoul · 30/10/2010 18:02

Have you seen that irl? It's just that I was in NL with the dds yesterday and none of the velvet looked v nice: quite patchy and cheap-looking. Sorry. A shame because the shape of that one is nice.

brimfull · 30/10/2010 18:03

nice blazer

was in NL yesterday

most of their stuff is sooo hideous atm

brimfull · 30/10/2010 18:04

yes dd and I walked out in disgust -arf

NannyPatsSausagePlait · 30/10/2010 18:04

it is a VILE shop. Dd and I come out of there thinking 'why the hell did we go in?'

Tis cyb btw gg. HELLO

brimfull · 30/10/2010 18:18

aaah
tis all making sense

brimfull · 30/10/2010 18:18

hello

Clure · 30/10/2010 18:48

someone linked to this top which would look lovely with jeans and heels
this from mint velvet is also lovely and it also comes in black also like this

BelligerentGhoul · 30/10/2010 18:51

Clure - I absolutely love all of those. Do you think the third one would be too high for those of us with norkage though?

overmydeadbody · 30/10/2010 18:56

I think a top that is more than just a t-shirt, fitted, and flattering is fine as a going out top.

Some girls interpret 'going-out' clothes to mean anything sluttey that shows off cleavage (and muffin top), and hopefully legs too. Not really a nice look.

Sometimes I think 'going out' clothes are just anything that make you feel a bit dressed up and confident. If you spend every day in very smart clothes and heels in an office your take on 'going out' clothes will be quite different from someone who spends most days in more casual attire. As a tacher I don't dress in tailored style of office workers, so my going out outfits might resemble something they might wear to work and they will need to dress up even more to go out.

I am rambling now. I blame the wine.

overmydeadbody · 30/10/2010 18:58

clure I like that ruffle shoulder blouse.

I like a bit of lace in my going out tops, nut I also like a bit of colour.

I like dresses actually, have a number of dresses that work with tights and boots for going out. I like dresses.

Clure · 30/10/2010 19:34

yes I agree with you overmydeadbody, an outfit that makes you feel dressed up and confident and a bit special is a going out outfit. I am more of a dress person myself. Warehouse have some FAB dresses at the moment

Belligerentghoul, glad you liked the suggestions, think the third top would be ok for larger norks (although as a 32A I am probably not the best to advise on that front!) they stock the mint velvet range in House of Frazer so if you are able to try it on it might be a good idea

BelligerentGhoul · 30/10/2010 19:36

Envy at your 32As!

I have a few MV things, so will probably go and try it on.

happilyeverafter · 30/10/2010 20:02

We went to a pub last night.

90% of women were wearing top/black trouser combos or jeans/dressy top.

My MIL looked lovely in black trousers and a long sleeved black plain top with a dressy necklace.

I wore a knit breton dress, opaques, heels, blazer and a blingy necklace.

I use nights out usually as an excuse to wear a dress as we don't get out much so it's nice to wear something that I wouldn't wear for day.

SerendipityAlways · 30/10/2010 22:42

Thanks for all the really great advice and general discussion about what constitutes going out clothes! (have been watching x factor for past 2 hours so only catching up here now!)

I particularly like the Mint Velevt tops, I'm small on top so think they would suit.

I think you're so right overmydeadbody, a lot of its about what makes you feel really happy/confident in yourself and for me comfort with style is what I'm looking for. I work in an office in the mornings and am a Mum on the school run/in the kitchen for the afternoon so I do like to "dress up" when I go out, without necessarily donning a little black number!

That great charcoal lace shell top from MV is only available in a 16! [hsad]

Clure · 31/10/2010 12:02

serendipity, thats a shame, have seen this maybe not quite as nice but a possible alternative?
also this which I bought a little while ago, although the sleeves are a bit flappy I am taking them in a bit!
there are also a few lace/mesh type tops in primark at the moment

SerendipityAlways · 31/10/2010 15:29

Thanks Clure!
