Black Maxi Skirt - what should I wear with it?

I've got a black maxi skirt but every time I put it on I can't think what would go well with it. I need footwear and top - long sleeves or warm please because my office is bloomin freezing!!!!

I need to know this too. Didn't think too carefully when I bought it, I guess. It's hard not to look frumpy.

They look good with vests, but not terribly practical for winter.

Anyone else know what to wear with a maxi skirt? I think flat boots/shoes would work in terms of foot wear.

sweetheart · 28/10/2010 11:23

yeah I put it on with heals this morning and felt a bit stupid. I don't own many flat shoes and wore it with ballet pumps in summer but they aren't really suitable for winter!

I bought a charcoal one last week and wore it with a light grey v neck jumper, grey pashmina, denim jacket and brown boots with a low chunky heel. Really I need grey boots but I can't find any that I like anywhere.

I think you need to avoid anything slightly pointy footwear-wise, as it easily looks witchy. I also think that black boots and black skirt look too heavy and sort of nun-ish/Quarker-ish/Amish-ish.

BelligerentGhoul · 28/10/2010 11:27

Quarker? Ugh? :)

sweetheart · 28/10/2010 11:35

I really want Grey boots too but I just can't find any ANYWHERE!!!!

I am wearing similar - Grey v-neck jumper and brown boots but I'm not convinced the colour palette is working!

I do like grey and brown together (grey clothes and brown boots are one of my staples for days when I'm trying not to wear black) but grey boots would deffo be better. I had a thread but the only pair that anybody found for me that I actually liked wear nearly 200 pounds.

tefal · 28/10/2010 11:46

Where did you get the charcoal skirt? Linky?

sweetheart · 28/10/2010 12:31

I feel your pain - I tried to start a similar thread the other day and linked to my current boots which I would love in grey - I got asked if I was promoting my own ebay auction Hmm

Try a long-sleeved T and/or cardigan with a skinny belt. For double the chic, wrap a long skinny belt round twice.

Flat boots best for yer modern maxi.

What about these grey boots only £25 (not 80) in the Office sale: e MINTY WRINKLE GREY LEATHER. Have just been reduced more so might run out today...

BelligerentGhoul · 28/10/2010 14:25

Link here I love it! Very flattering on, even on little round me. :)

sweetheart · 28/10/2010 14:29

hmm corey gal I suspect your look might work BUT my tummy is my worst area and putting a belt round it only draws the eye to my rolls of flab! I'm looking for long grey boots - sorry should have stated that before hand. I can't do ankle boots, I have short legs with cankles which are only accentuated them!

Out of interest - what length cardi would you go for? I feel you can't really wear the long boyf type ones as it just looks odd with a long skirt!

BelligerentGhoul · 28/10/2010 14:32

I can't do belts either. My jumper sits just below the wiast, ie long enough to cover my tummy but not long enough to cover the lovely drapey bit on my skirt.

BelligerentGhoul · 28/10/2010 14:33

waist - apologies for shed-loads of mistakes in my posts. I seem to have forgotten how to spell/type/use fingers.

BelligerentGhoul · 28/10/2010 14:37

Not fond of those Office boots. I think I need a very slight 'flat' heel, rather than totally flat. In fact, I need my brown boots - but in grey.

sweetheart · 28/10/2010 14:42

I want my brown boots in grey too! They sold them in black last year and I wish I'd brought them.

yep also agree - need a slight heal instead of totally flat. I'm thinking about 7cm and not a wedge either

pointy hat and a broom

BelligerentGhoul · 28/10/2010 14:59

I hate wedge-heeled boots with a passion. They just look all wrong. Strange, as am quite fond of wedge shoes.
