A cuddly Peter Rabbit from John Lewis.

DiggeryGravery · 26/10/2010 20:11

ANTagony · 26/10/2010 20:15

kittya · 26/10/2010 20:19

Im rubbish with cuddly toys. I was thinking of something to wear. They are up in Scotland so it will be cold!! I want something from somewhere thats not on every high street. Not too high end fashion (he will be getting enough of that once his dear mum has recovered, she's had stitches where she didnt think was possible)

A lovely blanket? Grobag?

Guacamole · 26/10/2010 20:21

We got a ridiculous amount of blue teddy bears, so please, no blue teddy bears! Baby Gros in a larger size are always welcome! Or a nice Gro Bag? Or wait until he is born and you know his name, John Lewis do lovely framed name pictures for his bedroom.

luciemule · 26/10/2010 20:26

what about a baby gilet for spring?
here

My BIL in Ireland sent us a Manterol blanket for DS1, I think it's a Spanish make. A wonderful light and warm blanket in fluffy fleece that washes like a dream and which we've used for three winters now. Maybe I should buy myself an adult version.

I like the blanket idea myself, gets used a lot (esp in Scotland!). My DH's aunt knit us an adorable little crib blanket which I would gladly have used for longer but was really only suitable for a newborn's crib.

My best present was from my brother and was a porringer (china bowl). Bunnykins or Peter Rabbit ones are nice. My DS is 2.5 and still uses it every day. We like it so much we have 3 now!

No plastic bowls and plates in this house [hgrin]

I have a friend who is having her second baby boy in a few weeks and she has soooooooo much stuff, but was recommended to look at a website where they sell bespoke footmuffs etc and they are lovely. One of the mums in my baby group has got a ton of their stuff for her pram and it's nice quality and not silly expensive. My friend has got a bugaboo cameleon so I am buying her a snuggle nest for the carrycot. The website is pretty poor and hard to navigate it's www.snunkie.co.uk but if you look up Snunkie on Facebook there are much more user-friendly pictures on there. The lady who runs it makes all kinds of lovely things - bags, buggy liners etc.

HowsTheSerenity · 26/10/2010 20:55

A lovely book that he can keep forever. They do a special keepsake book section in the kids section at waterstones.

loobylu3 · 26/10/2010 20:55

Something in a bigger size- maybe for next Winter, a blanket or a chunky wooden mobile.

kittya · 26/10/2010 20:57

whats a nappy cake?

OP posts:
emsyj · 26/10/2010 21:04

I got a nappy cake from work - you can find a picture if you google. It is basically a selection of nappies fashioned into a cake shape, usually with other stuff thrown in - mine came with a cuddly rabbit, a vest, some socks and a fleece blanket. I think they're pretty expensive for what you get, although I have used my fleece blanket a lot as it's a nice size for the pram.

Guacamole · 26/10/2010 21:05

I think new Mums do like Gro bags, I've used them since he was big enough (about 3 weeks old) and still am now he's 6 months. Can I recommend you buy a proper Gro bag from the Gro company. I have a JoJo one that can't be tumble dried (ridiculous) and a Debenhams one that shrunk in the tumble drier. My Gro company ones are excellent! Go for a 2.5 tog!

kittya · 26/10/2010 21:05

sounds like the kind of thing you would buy if afew of you were chipping in. Nice idea.

I will start googling.

cuddlemoo towel? They are really cute when they start toddling in them.

CultureMix · 26/10/2010 21:17

If this is a first baby, my other top tip is a baby thermometer, you know the ones with an ear tip. Ok so not pretty but terribly useful, and reassuring to have as well - always recommend trying it out a few times on normal temp baby to get used to it. First question doc asks is always what the temperature reading is.

If baby has a sibling there will already be a thermometer in the house don't bother!

Unisex tip btw, personally I try to give gifts that would suit either boy or girl.

OooohWhatIfItHurts · 26/10/2010 21:21

I was given Trumpette baby socks for my DS when he was a newborn and he wore them to death. Really cute and attracted lots of compliments. And he will need lots of socks over the winter.

Here but they sell them in lots of places.

I received a nappy cake too but the quality of the contents was a bit suspect so watch out for that.

Oh and I love Stork Gifts for good quality and slightly different toys.

Pluto · 26/10/2010 21:24

Grobag definitely - I used one pretty much immediately.

Wooden letters which spell out his name for his bedroonm door (even if he has this already they can be stuck to a wardrobe or something).

Brio train track - far too young atm obviously but such a great pressie for later.
