Do you have beautiful rugs in your house?

I'd love one like the ones at Liberty but wondering if there is somewhere better.

(I'd prefer one of my parents but shipping it is too much bother. And besides they probably want to keep them.)

I like the old silk quality. Any ideas?

I think a friend bought an antique rug at Harrods???

If you like contemporary (but I'm guessing you don't), there's this company.

I wonder if you should try googling for antique chinese rugs? Thre might be more old silk ones around ...

MarshaBrady · 26/10/2010 16:34

Yes Harrods could be the ticket. Smile

(thanks for your pm btw did you get mine? Hopelessly late)

Yes. A nice Chinese or Persian one that was my mother's. Rolled up snugly in anti-fungal paper In the Loft. The idea of letting DC anywhere near it... .

Sounds really beautiful ragged. Bet you are looking forward to seeing it again.

We got a beautiful old silk/wool rug from this website. Website is a bit clunky but there are lots of photos of each rug so we felt fairly confident buying it. There is a huge range of styles, ages, prices...so it's a bit of a pain to navigate around. Prices seemed very good compared with places with showrooms to run.

MarshaBrady · 26/10/2010 16:57

Ah yes loads! I know I want pale colours, muted and faded. And for it to be beautiful. (I probably know too little on the subject of rugs) Will have a look. Thank you

You need to get yourself to a decent auction house.

We got a beauty from an auction - £500 and it's massive - about 4m x3.5m. Really good quality, Persian.

Word of warning - if you get a rug second hand/auction or even from a big warehouse CHECK FOR MOTHS!

This is quite useful

Not yet; we will inherit some one day including the large Persian rug DH used to be put on to play to keep him off the carpet!

Actually DH is thinking of asking his mum for one now as we're planning to get DD a Wii for xmas and he wants to protect our living room carpet from trampling. Apparently (apart from the fringes) its as tough as old boots.

When we lioved in London, we used to go to teh two Criterion Auction houses a lot, and also Lots Rd sometimes. Alwasy lots of slightly shabby, faded grandeur style rugs to look at. Bought lots of our furniture there, but never rugs. Great fun to go and have a look, anyway.

Criterion

Lots Rd

If not, my dream home would have rugs from here

MarshaBrady · 26/10/2010 19:56

Auctions if course.

I quickly looked at Sotheby's - they do a few not sure how many yet.

And plum that's great. Will check these out when children are out of my hair.

I usually only buy from design places but I just had a huge feeling I could get into beautiful stuff from auctions .

Lots Road can be very good. You need to track down some reputable out of town ones.
