Black tie wedding - eeeek!

We're going to an old friends wedding in a couple of months and the invitation states black tie. I don't do smart dressing and am at a total loss as to what I ought to wear. Does this mean balldresses for the women? Cocktail dresses? Or just a smart dress?

It's in Manchester, so am assuming all other guests will be pretty glam. Has anybody seen anything lately that might be appropriate?

I think we'd need a little more info, budget, your size, shape ?? Don't fret, there's lots out there.

For me I'd say knee length cocktail dress would be perfect. So maybe Coast for something like this?

Coast

Ballgowns are definately not required for black tie wedding. It means the men hire hideous, badly fitting cheap suits, and women wear pretty much what they wear to normal weddings. Can never understand black tie weddings...I too think knee length dress cocktail dress is fine.Lots in the shops at the mo,as christmas party time is nearly on us!

Another vote here for a cocktail dress rather than ball dress. If you buy this season's Coast make sure it fits and is flattering because you are reasonably likely to bump into someone else wearing the same thing and you want to be able to say 'it looks better on me' to yourself.

sorry, been away from mn (working, very uncharacteristically).
I am size 12/14, short, big boobs, no waist, dont do slinky as am lumpy, and would prefer not to show arms. However, having said all that the Coast dress is lovely, but not sure it would look better on me than someone else...
