Dress help needed!

Hi all, Looking for some ideas from you stylish types. I need a dress for a daytime family party. I need to feel confident amongst some fairly judgy people but I certainly don't want to look like I am trying too hard IYSWIM.
I am 5 ft 10 tall and a size 12-14. (Was much fatter last time I saw most of the people who will be there - so that helps a bit re confidence)
All help appreciated!

What's your budget??

WorldsSlowestTypist · 25/10/2010 16:14

Not too much I'm afraid - about £150 max

Wow, that's quite a significant budget!!!

What's your colouring? Will you be outside much? What do you normally like to wear? Do you want something that will be kept "for best" as it were, or something you could later wear for work/a girls' night out, etc.? How old are you?

All relevant questions, I promise!!

MentalFloss · 25/10/2010 16:25

This could look lovely!
As could this
the Tilsden dress could work

HTH!

WorldsSlowestTypist · 25/10/2010 16:27

£150 is absolutly the top though and relies on me having suitable shoes etc.
I am 45, fairly tanned with highlighted hair (covering the grey!) We will be inside and I would like to be able to dress it up or down for different events if possible. I certainly don't want to look overdressed.

I am quite slim around the waist area now but my thighs are still quite chunky so no shorter than knee length.

No idea, I am not a maven, but I love your username Grin

CaptainNancy · 25/10/2010 16:31

Actually, just noticed your dimensions- there was a lovely wrap dress in boden last season that looked fantastic on someone I know of your stature... will link when I'm not on phone later.

WorldsSlowestTypist · 25/10/2010 16:34

Thanks for those. I love both the Phase 8 dresses.

The second one is just the sort of dress that I admire on other people. It looks so classy but I don't think that I could wear that grey.

The puple is lovely. In the past I have avoided high necklines but perhaps I should try some on now that my norks have shrunk!

The Hobbs dress isn't me I'm afraid.

Great start MF!

found this, but you might think it's a bit short

More to follow ...

WorldsSlowestTypist · 25/10/2010 16:36

Thanks Captain! What is a maven?

OP posts:
Meow75 · 25/10/2010 16:37

depends how small your norks now are

Meow75 · 25/10/2010 16:39

age appropriate?!?!

WorldsSlowestTypist · 25/10/2010 16:42

Hmm, I love the Ted Baker one but my legs just arn't up to it. 45 year old knees!

TKMaxx dress is a bit shapeless I think

I like several of these, so didn't bother with individual links.

HtheseH.

Ha - My daughter would look fab in the Kookai dress - It is yummy.

Don't know about LA. Haven't been in there since the 80s! That dress is nice though It would need to fit very well I think.

Meow75 · 25/10/2010 16:50

Surely, it's about the individual items not the label.

Have you got time to actually go high street shopping, rather than Internet shopping?

WorldsSlowestTypist · 25/10/2010 16:53

Should have said that the hostess ALWAYS wears Monsoon. So it is out of bounds!

I love this WC dress, would work well for a daytime party and with your dimensions. Couple of wise and avid ladies recommended it (sorry can't remember who) as being flattering and looks very understated and elegant.

OOS until Dec but someone did mention them shipping already.

WorldsSlowestTypist · 25/10/2010 16:59

Agree about individual Items Meow. I just meant that I couldn't comment on the sizes as you implied that they were small.
I will have time for a quick shopping trip but I think that I will need to have some ideas in mind. I tend to wander around shops aimlessly and get disheartened if I don't know what I am looking for.

White Company dress in Navy would be lovely
for work and play!

A maven is an expert Smile

The term is often used in conjunction with the word fashion- "fashion maven"

It actually rhymes with raven, but in my head I like to say ma-ven to rhyme with cavern [odd bod]

Re dress, what about something like this? it isn't the actual one Im thinking of, but along those lines.

TethHearseEnd · 25/10/2010 19:57

This is nice
