Decent hardworking socks (wool?) that won't wear out in five minutes!

Can you help me out with some ideas for some plain, hardworking socks that will wear well?

I bought a load of socks from M&S last year as their standard socks were then 3 for £5 or a similar good price, but they all seem to have worn out... However, their sock brethren that I bought from M&S many years ago are still going strong. So work that one out!

Will wool wear better than cotton?

I am happy to pay a bit more to get harder working socks, if that is how the sock labour market works.

Would like socks in black and brown, possibly lighter brown too. Interested in both short socks and knee highs.

Thanks.

I am in love with the Falke brand of socks and woolly tights - last year's are still going strong.

I do think that wool socks/tights needs to be washed as you would a woollen sweater or dress ie with Woolite on the wool cycle in your machine.

I've got these and they're jolly good.

Try a shop which specialises in equestrian kit or hill walking.
Both sell a range of thicker socks. Wool with a small amount of nylon at the sole are the most hardwearing imo.

I have bought some knee length wool -ish from M&S today- £9 I think for 2 pairs.

Also, J Lewis do some lovely wool and silk ones ( ankle length) for around £6.50. I bought 2 pairs last year and they are so cosy. Just don't tumble dry or they will shrink.

M&S also do some short thermal socks which have quite a high wool %.

All the above are online.
