Not a many-hundreds-of-pounds coat, but what is decent/accaptable/crap?

I would want at least 80%.

purplepeony · 24/10/2010 20:30

70% min.

EvilAllenPoe · 24/10/2010 20:32

depends on what you want from the coat.

Unprune · 24/10/2010 20:33

Hmm I was asking in a shop today how much wool was in their coats and the assistant said "Why do you want to know? Does it make a difference?"
Hmm Hmm Hmm
I thought 70% or 80% too. It's cold here.

EvilAllenPoe · 24/10/2010 20:38

this one is only 70%..but 15% cshmere too!

and obv. lovely quality

and this shorter one

is 100% and gorgeous.

and this single-breasted and curvier offering doesn't own up to a %age.

EvilAllenPoe · 24/10/2010 20:40

nor, oddly, does this one from LK Bennett.

EvilAllenPoe · 24/10/2010 20:41

i think if you wanted a smoother/shinier/softer fabric then less wool could help though.

Unprune · 24/10/2010 20:43

You can weave 100% wool so it's shiny: it's very tightly woven, almost mothproof. It costs a fortune though.

EvilAllenPoe · 24/10/2010 20:43

this one from biba is also 70% with a dash of cashmere...

TrillianSlasher · 25/10/2010 10:31

Thanks, I had no clue, this is really helpful.

im always a fan of 70% upwards!!

unfortunately its a bit pricey!

HonestyBox · 25/10/2010 11:39

100% wool is well worth it imo. My coat four years on still looks brand new despite heavy usage. DP's 80% wool one from Reiss is about the same age and now looks crap and bobbly.

olderandwider · 25/10/2010 14:51

I had a 65% wool/35% synthetic fibre(forget which) Hobbs coat. Twas rubbish - it pilled almost immediately and yet it cost, if memory serves, around £200!

coffeenut · 25/10/2010 14:56

More wool does not mean it will last longer. In fact good quality synthetic fabrics will generally do a lot better in the long run.

FloellaB · 25/10/2010 15:16

I agree, coffeenut. I think the more pricier labels tend to have a higher % of wool so people feel they have more of a luxe item and look after it better anyway.

I had a lovely 100% wool coat I bought in a designer sale but I found it looked worn very quickly, within a few months. I replaced it with a 40% coat in the New Look sale and that's still looking good a couple of years on!

DivineInspiration · 25/10/2010 16:01

I have a 100% wool coat from Coast, expensive, and it's quite pilled and bobbly. I don't know whether that's because of the wool content, the weave, the shop, the manufacture or what. I also have a Topshop coat that's 80% wool and an H&M coat that's 70% wool. To be honest, they've worn better than the Coast one and are still very warm. I generally look for 70% upwards, but some with less are still very nice.
