Has anyone successfully rid their nose of blackheads?

I didn't think I'd still have these in my 30s...gah.

Anyway, I've tried loads of things to no avail so I thought I'd see if anyone else had the same problem and had any products to recommend?

Recently I've tried the Neutrogena blackhead cleanser, Clean&Clear blackhead cleanser, and the Freederm cream facial cleanser.

Still look like someone's dotted my nose with a biro - please help!

Does it have to be a vegetable oil for the oil cleansing or could I use baby oil?

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 25/10/2010 12:52

I tried oil cleansing once, the sensation of having my face covered in oil was horrible. Probably I just used too much. Maybe need to give it another go./

juneybean · 25/10/2010 16:16

I don't think baby oil works, just tried it and my skin feels really try...it's not glowing :(

DivineInspiration · 25/10/2010 16:38

For those who use the oil cleansing method, where do you buy castor oil? I've wanted to try it for a while but when I asked in Boots, my local pharmacist and Sainsburys for castor oil they looked at me as if I were Vera Drake.

I've always had problems with blackheads, but find my skin does get better when I use a full cleansing routine - cleanser, toner, exfoliater, cleansing wash and matte moisturiser twice a day. I often forget/can't be bothered though, and then my skin gets awful.

juneybean · 25/10/2010 16:38

Think you can get it in the pharmacy! But they won't sell it to you if you're pregnant!

juneybean · 25/10/2010 16:39

Ohh sorry just seen you asked in your pharmacy lol

ProfYaffle · 25/10/2010 16:42

I got castor oil online, couldn't get it in the chemist, but I found it a bit too drying. I've stuck with olive oil since.

BridesheadRegardless · 25/10/2010 16:44

Tesco pharmacy for castor oil, boots didn't have it.

Unprune · 25/10/2010 16:49

Ha, I was just thinking: I haven't paid any attention to my nose pores for AGES.

And then I read MI's post. Grin

DivineInspiration · 25/10/2010 16:53

Thanks, I'll try Tesco and other pharmacies first, otherwise I'll have a look online.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 25/10/2010 20:14

local independent pharmacy was where I got mine
Think Lloyds do it
I also asked in sainsbury's and they looked at me like i was mad

How do I clean my face on the other days without undoing all the oily goodness then?

HouseOfBamboo · 26/10/2010 09:20

juneybean - I think baby oil is mineral-based which is not what you want, you want a natural vegetable oil.

However some veg oils do leave you with that slightly dry 'papery' feel. I avoid using olive oil for that reason.

Sunflower oil is better for leaving your skin feeling soft not papery, but imo rice bran oil is the best. You can get it in the cooking oil section of large supermarkets.

Shreiiik - I think you kind of have to relax into it re covering your face in oil. Wear a headband so your hair is off your face, and make sure your hands are warm before rubbing oil in. Think of it as a relaxing face massage. It helps if the oil smells nice - add (sparing) drops of your favorite essential oil. A tiny bit of tea tree oil is good to add as well as it keeps bacteria at bay. Use really warm water on your flannel / kitchen roll when removing the oil, ime it's a v nice sensation.

HouseOfBamboo · 26/10/2010 09:21

juneybean - re cleaning on other days, I think it's fine to use oil every day, as long as it isn't castor oil.

aquamortis · 26/10/2010 09:44

the muslin element of the oil cleansing method is pretty important, I think

I use the waitrose baby bottom butter, which is basically just olive oil but with vanilla so it smells nice, and it's easy to use because it's not liquid. Might try rice bran oil now though, reading HoB's post.

OCM works amazingly well on my blocked pores as well as dry patches, etc - skin has never been better

I think that some of the other solutions I've tried for blackheads (pore strips, serious scrubs, etc) work in the short term but actually make things worse over the long term, and because I've got quite dry skin they make it uncomfortable too.

juneybean · 28/10/2010 00:06

I got some EVOO out the cupboard this morning but my skin really completely dry. I haven't got any castor oil yet, does this matter?

Although admittedly my skin is looking clear, just very dry.

HouseOfBamboo · 31/10/2010 13:33

Juneybean - am intrigued, what is Evoo? What regime are you using? It may be that you need to add a good daytime moisturiser after wiping skin with warm water in the morning.
