Did anyone wear a snood when they got married Or is any one a hairdresser who can fit one?

Is it on elastic or on combs?

How do they fit on?

TIA

I can't picture what you mean - do you have a link to one?

fuzzywuzzy · 23/10/2010 21:03

It's like a net which encases a bun or losely gathers up hair...

littledawley · 23/10/2010 21:11

any help?

Katymac can I ask what you want this for? I am an orthodox jew and this is a head covering used in our community which is very common in my part of London. I have to say though that I've never known anyone else to wear one or want to!

Havingkittens · 23/10/2010 21:27

It's slightly elasticated round the edges like a hairnet. Most people I know that wear them use hair grips to secure them and then put hair flowers in to decorate the sides and conceal the edges. You may find it helpful to backcomb the roots slightly around the area where you are pinning the snood to give the grips a bit of surface to grip onto rather than slippy soft hair.

If you're into 40s styles you could get some hints from the forums at www.thefedoralounge.com or www.whatkatiedid.com/forum and do a search for snoods. There's plenty of info there!

Guacamole · 23/10/2010 21:29

I thought a snood was one of those funny tubes that you used as a scarf and could place over your head to keep your ears warm?

Havingkittens · 23/10/2010 21:31

ps. if you are wearing a snood because you like 40s style and are looking for an ace hairdresser for your wedding you could do a lot worse than Nina at www.ninasvintageandretrohair.com (if you're in London or surrounding areas, of course!)

KatyMac · 23/10/2010 21:31

lisalisa - I think the ones I am looking at are a tad more decorative (I used to live in Hendon). DD is a competitive ballroom dancer & we need to make her 'stand out' more. She has afro hair and we wanted her to wear it out for the Latin but she ha to have it tied up for the Ballroom - so a snood would be a happy compromise

Havingkittens - I have gone for a sort of hairnet/showercap shape, using a flowered headband to hide it but as you can see from the other thread I am struggling

Guacamole - we have Nick Kershaw to thank for than incarnation! That's not what a snood was originally.

Havingkittens · 23/10/2010 21:34

....me again, I've just looked at your profile KatyMac and see you're in Norfolk. So, try Amy at Flint hairdressers in Norwich who also specialises in vintage hairstyling.

Havingkittens · 23/10/2010 21:36

It's best to section off your hair behind your ears ie. part the front section off and pin out of the way and just attach it to the back area of your hair. Then style the front afterwards in rolls or similar. Does that make sense?

KatyMac · 23/10/2010 21:38

No - wrong style think spanish/flamenco absolutely smooth to the headband then riotous curls in the net (picture of DD at the bottom of my profile)

Nik Kershaw... Wow there's a name from the past!

I'm very glad you don't want to get married in what I remember a snood to be, that would be strange.

lisalisa · 23/10/2010 21:42

Katymac - did you really? For some reason I thought you lived in Norwich or Bristol ( having sometimes read your childminding threads...). Then you will know that there are some great shops in and around this area where you can buy snoods too. In my experience and the ones I have they don't have clips but are elasticated and held on by that. Good luck to your daughter...xx

KatyMac · 23/10/2010 21:45

I lived there 92-98 (now in Norwich)

She is wearing something like these in her hair

I'll add some photos of her dresses

Ah, ok. So you'd probably need to do a low bun with all the curls and then snip the elastic edge of the snood and once you've fed the hair into it, pull the ends of the elastic so the band gathers up tight enough to contain the hair without being baggy and then tie the ends of the elastic together at the top and maybe wind around and tie again underneath the bun to secure it and then pin flowers or a large bow around the edges if you want to embellish.

Any good?

This seller does custom made snoods so may be able to help

KatyMac · 23/10/2010 21:55

That may be where I am going wrong as I'm not fastening it at all

To wear it loose for Latin (10 minute change for clothes & hair) it needs to have not been to fastened - cos DH although spectacular with her hair isn't that good Wink

Maybe we should rethink

I'd have thought with the texture of your daughter's hair it would look great just in a ponytail with the flowers. You could try just putting glitter spray on it for extra glam?

KatyMac · 23/10/2010 21:59

Algernon Road, but I worked at Everon/Arksign & the job centre plus I haunted the Hendon Dance Centre

I could never have childminder on Algernon - 1st floor maisonette - nightmare stairs to garden

Dr surgery was along past the pub on the main road towards BC

I also lived for a very short time in Bell Lane - the Tower block; Longford Court....7th or 8th floor (nightmare)

I loved the Jewellers up that way & I got tonnes of evening wear from the charity shops

Havingkittens that is how she wears it - I'll do a special thread for you
