tipping after a service- how much and do you do it?

How many of you actually tip after a beauty service and how much is deemed appropriate? Also who do you give it to?
I always tip in restaurants and its straightforward but never know what to do at salons. I'm pretty fussy so usually end up not being entirely satisfied and have come to the point where I end up going to Vietnamese nail places where tipping is not expected and it's a no frills service (but they are so good!).
What about at a hair salon- do I have to tip the hair washer, hair dresser etc and who do I give the money to- the receptionist or directly to them? I know owner occupiers don't expect so that's easy but with not working for a while and very high prices these days- what to do?
Also for voucher deals (had one mani pedi yesterday for £15 instead of £45), I'm assuming the tipping is a percentage of the full price... The girl was really sweet but overall I thought the quality was really poor- what would you have done?

In a lot of hair salons the wages can be quite low and also related to how many clients the stylist has done. so most stylists do appreciate a tip. The ones that wash hair really appreciate the extra as they will be training and can be on very low wages, and if you don't feel/ can't really afford to tip everyone, just tip a couple of pounds to the person that washed your hair. You do not need to tip the owner

Any more thoughts? Also interested in thoughts of those who receive tips- do you get it from most clients?

No not everyone tips the stylists, and they shouldn't expect it

This is something that's being worrying me a bit lately. I get my hair cut every 6 weeks and coloured every 3 (grey roots Sad)and it's £35 for the colour and about £40 for the cut. I usually tip about £6 - £7 when I have the cut and colour together (and ask for it to be split) but can't really afford it. I think the suggestion to tip the lady who washes hair is a good one.

I also put this post up in moneysaving expert and got many more responses- very interesting- in case anyone wants to read more...

I think the reason I'm asking is because I used to tip but haven't worked for so long that I don't have that much spare (I'd rather it go to the kids). Cut maybe 4 times a year- really not a lot, colour much less. Although just discovered Groupon and quite excited about it- just had a microdermabrasion today- one of 6 treatments at bargain price of £46 (I think) for all 6...and it was good.
