I used to have my natural mousy brown hair highlighted so it was a nice blonde, several months ago i dyed my hair medium brown with a semi permanent,as my hair is porous (sp) from the bleach highlights the brown is here to stay,i kind of like it but am thinking i'd like it highlighted again,is this ok? will the highlights show up? sorry, bit clueless about this kind of thing but trying to learn from past mistakes and research first so i've nothing to regret later!Shock

Probably the only thing thats going to lighten the brown now will be bleach again, was it a 8 washes or 28 wash semi?

Happycornwallmum · 20/10/2010 18:20

Hmm...think it was 24,was a nice and easy semi

I think you would need bleach aswell. I have died my own hair brown for years(i am naturally brown but with quite a bit of grey)
.I am too fed up with every 4 weeks getting the brown dye out and would love hilights but the fact I would have to have bleach is sstopping me getting it done....has anyone ever had bleached hilights and not had the yellow, straw effect that I seem to end up with??

YOU NEED TO GO TO A DECENT HAIRDRESSER!

I have permanent colour to cover grey, and have quite often had low lights to cover grey. Yes, there must be some bleach in there, but the condition of my hair has always been OK.

If you mixed more than one bottle of product together and its 24 washes its probably a demi permanent which is why it hasn't washed out of your hair. People think its like a semi but if you have to mix it before use the'developing' lotion, although ammonia free, will still have a very small percentage of hydrogen peroxide in it to activate the colour. If you now put tint on it won't lighten it, it will reactivate the colour that you last did. You can use bleach - if your hair is up to it- in foils then it can be toned using very light tint to remove any yellowing. Maintain it with a silverising shampoo

That's right Blackwidow,i mixed two bottles together,it's not that i don't like the colour,it just doesn't feel like me anymore,so bleach highlights are the way to go...better start saving up!

make sure the hairdresser uses 6% peroxide, the lowest, its slower to lift the colour but more gentle and you won't get over bleached look, why not have a few done through the front hairline and parting, this can be cheaper and brings light around the face - and have fine/medium ones

I'm excited now and wish i could afford to have it done tomorrow! This colour i have right now is so flat,if you get me,it has no depth, just one block of colour.

Whilst you are waiting use a water based semi 8 WASHES ONLY and no mixing, in 3-4 shades lighter (no red) than your colour. It will add shine to your existing colour

Happycornwallmum · 20/10/2010 18:53

Ah,thanks,will do that

HI Blackwidow spider-can you help me? will a water based semi cover grey? As i think i am too going to go for a few hilights just around the hairline and parting soon when I have the money.

blackwidowspider · 21/10/2010 08:08

hi Fayeso, unfortunately water based semi won't cover the grey.

water based colours are transluscent and only coat the outside if the hair more permanent colours go inside the hair so you will still be able to see the grey through a water based semi

fayeso · 21/10/2010 10:40

Thanks-what a pain gery hair is -with me block colouring it myself every 4 weeks I only get 2 weeks with no grey showing....Even with hilights I think it would need to be re-done every 2 months .....oh well I wont know until I try....I will ward my hairdresser to get the bleach out...

Ive been following this thread as I have a similar question.
Ive used water based (I think) hair staining conditioner on a regular basis. which does adere to my light sprinkings of grey for a few weeks. Now I'm growing out my pixie and have some length, my hair looks rather flat. I want some copper highlights for some lift, and wonder if these will work on my current coloring regime and what will happen to highlights when I continue to rinse my hair in my stain conditioner?
Or would you recomend adding highlights over a permanent dye?
Thank you
