erm well make sure you go to a hairdressers you dont want it to all break off

blackwidowspider · 20/10/2010 18:19

what colour is your hair now?

youngblowfish · 20/10/2010 18:31

Bleach, dye and then perm. Be prepared for the perm to alter your colour, as hair which had been bleached bleeds colour very easily. I think you need to wait at least two weeks between each procedure. You may be able to avoid waiting between the bleaching and dyeing, but only if you let a hairdresser do it for you - otherwise you may end up frying your hair or ending up with a colour which is not right.

Investing in a protein treatment and a good, silicone-free conditioner for treatments in between can minimise the damage, but expect your hair to be quite processed by the end.

carriedababi · 20/10/2010 18:36

oh whats a protein treatment?

i normal use pantene and someone tiold me not to use it as it has silicone in it?
i dont know why though>/

blackwidowspider · 20/10/2010 18:40

I'm not sure, the perm could frizz the hair if heavily bleached and completely dull out the colour. You need to test the elasticity of the hair. When its wet pul a few strands between your fingers, if its stretchy its overprocessed.

need to know what clour your are now and what you want to be?

blackwidowspider · 20/10/2010 18:49

Hair is made from dead keratin cells (protein) -like your nails.

Silicone coats the hair and can build up to form a protective layer over it - they can make colouring your hair more difficult if used all the time

All conditioners act like polyfiller on the hair - the outer layer (cuticle) is like fish scales all pointing towards the tips of the hair, when the cuticle gets damaged ( through colours and perms and over heat styling) it raises slightly. conditioner molecule pack into the spaces making it feel smooth.

Colourants open the cuticle using a chemical reaction ( oxidation, when you mix two bottle together ) and the colour molecule gets forced into the middle of the hair (shaft)where it expands slightly.

Perms break the hydrogen bonds (like a Ladder) inside the hair whilst its wound round a curler and the neutralizer resets them in the shape of the curler ( its like breaking a ladder in half then reseting it one rung up )

I think you might need to wait until 1986 comes round again.

blackwidowspider · 20/10/2010 18:55

for years and years and years - I love it Smile

SleepyDopeyGrumpy · 20/10/2010 18:58

Hi sorry im back now!

Currently bleached blond with my natural roots showing, ive always bleached it then put on the colour next day or so but haven't done anything to it since august.

The dye is a bright red semi permanent from the Crazy Colours Range, the bleach is the posh gold packet and bottles one i forget the name and the perm solution is pin up original.

Always done my own hair cant afford the hairdressers lol Never permed before though this is the first time in years it is long enough for it!

The Crazy colours are water based so won't do any harm.

Bleach first

do your crazy colour

take a reasonable cutting of your hair, small bits from different areas, and secure the root ends with packing/duck tape. do a test perm on that. If its really stretchy afterwards don't do it as it will probably break off. The perm will take quicker than the recommended time on bleached hair. It may go very frizzy so use large curlers.

if you think that it is safe to perm after the test it will take out the crazy colour again - but crazy colour can go on again, its only water based and can't damage the hair

SleepyDopeyGrumpy · 20/10/2010 19:15

Thanks BWS :-)

What do you mean by stretchy is bad though? Should it just snap when pulled?

OP posts:
blackwidowspider · 20/10/2010 19:24

Hair is a tiny bit stretchy in good condition but when chemically overloaded will stretch quite a bit and frizz and break. hair will stretch then break.not good

youngblowfish · 20/10/2010 21:02

Sorry, just came back. Great advice from BWS, just wanted to say that a protein treatment is a conditioning treatment you can use after washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo, but before putting a silicone-free conditioner on it. It temporarily improves the condition of your hair by replacing the proteins and can strengthen it before perming or bleaching etc. It will also improve elasticity.

I have this one.

jacksmomma · 22/10/2010 22:48

I would really advise against bleaching and perming it will really damage your hair , instead of perming I plait my hair in about four sections when damp apply some
mouse and leave it to dry it always comes out in nice waves ,it would save your hair from a lot of damage , using a really gentle shampoo will help your hair aveda do a really good one called shampure and their intensive conditioner is amazing
