Winter outerwear for baby

vez123 · 20/10/2010 16:23

So the crisp autumn days have arrived but I still have no proper warm outerwear for DS (5 months). I am pondering between a proper top to bottom snowsuit (purely because I see them everywhere), or just a little winter coat (my preference at the moment, seems more practical). What would you recommend? Or do I need both?

Cheers

Snowsuits are brilliant as they are so easy to take on and off.

Personally I never got on with snowsuits. I found them difficult to get on and off (!) and the baby never looked comfortable in them, like a little michelin man Grin

Also I don't think they are very practical when you are going in and out of shops as you can't adjust them easily (like blankets).

Also, a lot of people don't realise that it's dangerous to use padded coats in carseats, this is another reason why they are really not practical.

I stuck with blankets (and a little winter coat thing/nice thick cardigan/jumper/fleece, and hat) and when DS could kick blankets off, a footmuff. He has the bebeconfort one which is really snuggly :)

The fleecy sleepsuits you can get are fab for an extra warm layer, without the bulkiness of a snowsuit.

I tend to have a mixture of both.

We do alot of walking / outside activities with the older children, so I always have a snowsuit for the baby for when we are going to be outside for long periods of time. They don't have to be huge 'puffy' affairs - you can find ones that are thick fleece on the outside and jersey on the inside which are not quite so bulky but are very cosy.

I also have some of those little coats made of thick fleece that are lined with jersey that we use for most other trips that include car / pushchair and a mixture of indoor and out combined with a blanket.

Is there a link about the dangers of padded coats in carseats?
How does a snowsuit differ to a winter coat/ ouffa jacket in that one has legs, the other doesn't but still padded?

KenDoddsDadsZombieDogsNotDead · 20/10/2010 16:45

P.S I had a fleece snowsuit from Emile et Rose for DD not a padded one and it was great. No michelin child!

BertieBotts · 22/10/2010 18:48

It doesn't - any padded coat is dangerous in car seats. I will have a look for a link, I've definitely seen one.

ChunkyPickle · 22/10/2010 18:54

My carseat manual warns me about not putting the child in bulky clothes in the seat - I don't have a link though..

BertieBotts · 22/10/2010 18:55

Hmm, okay, actually all I can find now which seems to be relevant is this, other than adverts for car seat covers etc. Not entirely sure I buy the idea that the baby was flung out of the carseat but the jacket remained in place Confused

MayDayChild · 22/10/2010 19:03

Get a buggy snuggle!
Remember they need layers so a zip off top or fleece and a hat, mittens, blanket and buggy snuggle
Agree about car seat - why not get a sleeping bag for your carseat?
Snowsuits are for below zero type weather (which we did have last year so might be worth having one!)
Tho I put mine in snowsuits to go on the swings with!

ChunkyPickle · 22/10/2010 19:04

Found it in the online manual for a similar seat to mine:

www.babytrend.com/pdf/CS21XXX_0307.pdf

1.4) Do Not Dress your child in bulky clothing or other garments that will
hinder the harness from being snug around your baby and properly
latched between your child's legs.

It doesn't say why, but it's got to be because the baby could slip out.

Bushbaby fleece suit was a great investment- thin enough and warm enough at same time and easy to unzip front if we were in a warm place. stretchy so fitted a long time- when it was a bit too big I just rolled up the cuffs.

here

smugtandemfeeder · 22/10/2010 21:24

These are great for going inside the pushchair or the car seat. They are a blanket which the straps of the car seat fit through. You can then wrap and unwrap the baby when you go outside/inside without disturbing them and they can wear normal clothes underneath. IYSWIM.....

nicolamumof3 · 22/10/2010 22:16

to avoid the michelin effect go for jojo polartec suit, these are the fabbiest and cosiest snowsuits imo. Whilst still light enough to let babies move freely.

you also need jackets/coats for indoorsy type shopping or milder days with footmuff on Smile

jamaisjedors · 23/10/2010 20:30

I second smugtandemfeeder's suggestion.

We had one and it was fantastic, gave one to SIL who thought it was the best present ever.

Good for going in and out of shops too.

gorehaginhellsbum · 24/10/2010 10:18

Snowsuits are good if you do ALOT of outdoor pram pushing.
Not good if you have to nip into shops or anything else as they are very warm.
Frequent nappy changes are a pain with a wriggling, resistant baby too. Maybe I just found them a pain as I was pg with no.2 when doing all the above.
