The invitation says back tie. Any ideas what to wear. Never been to a black tie event before.

Either a smart cocktail type dress or a long dress but not a full-on ball gown in my experience.

What time is the event?

DietDiva · 19/10/2010 21:07

Thanks

The event is 7.30 til 1.30pm

The invitation says

drinks
meal
music
then casino

If it says black tie, then expect the female guests to be in long dresses (ankle or full length, either strapless or spagetti straps are most usual, some older ladies may wear sleeves Wink....... shorter dresses can be worn but usually look a little out of place. If it is a dinner then slinky dresses look great, but if there is a disco then choose something you can dance in! Heels don't have to be high, handbags need to be small and sparkly, and a shawl or pashmina type wrap will also be fine. Beware of black as you are likely to be wearing the same colour as a large number of other guests which can look a tad dull IMO Grin

Thanks

Seen a long black dress in Monsoon which I liked. I think they had it in other colours which I will try.

Not really used to wearing long dresses would prefer knee length but dont want to stand out if everyone will be wearing long dresses. Get invited to quite a few but never been as unsure what to wear.

I normally wear knee length things to this sort of thing Blush

I'm never the only one, because they are just that bit more versatile

You will look better comfortable in a shorter dress than uncomfortable in a longer dress

think I will just see what fits best. Once I've been to one black tie I'll be more confident to wear brighter colours etc. Was thinking black just to be safe.
