I've only ever dyed my hair dark and i didn;t worry too much about the roots, i just applied it to the scalp area of my hair first and then massaged it through to the ends.
Always worked fine for me. I used to use the clairol 10 minute one, in medium dark brown. I'm back into the 5 weekly hairdresser trips for my hihglights again now.

Best thing is to get a friend to help, or use the squeezy bottle nozzle to squirt the colour close to the scalp and then massage you hair at the roots only.

Colour rules;

a lighter tint will NOT make the ends lighter if they are already dyed, if you comb through the colour it will just activate the colour you did last time and look darker than the root.

If you are reaplying the same colour you did last time, put it on roots, leave for 20-40 mins then massage through to the ends using some water so you get even coverage for the last 5-10mins

tint gets tint of the skin - so just before you wash it off, especially dark colours, rub around the hairline/parting with a little water, it looks messy but removes staining round the hairline/parting.

To kill yellow tones in bleached hair/ blonde hair use lightest ash blonde tint to tone it and silver shampoo to maintain it

Bleaching dark hair at home is generally difficult and mostly disasterous; ask the hairdresser to do it

I diy colour without any problems. Even tried those ones with highlighter streaks and it was ok. Start with a safeish colour not too far from your current colour and just follow the instructions. Good luck

i always do my own colour. i have done both foils and an all over colour.

if you have never done it before get a firend over to help. not to do it for you but to be tehre to check youhave it allevenly applied and to assist with tricky bits.

Speckledeggy · 18/10/2010 22:15

Yes, very easy. Just take your time and don't panic.

I use Nice 'n' Easy as does my Mum. She gets so many comments about her hair it's untrue! Not me of course!!!

Use the semi permanent ones that last for 28 washes.

Don't leave the dye on too long.

Linconlass, Yes. If you have a lot of grey though you need specifically buy colour that states you get 100% grey coverage on the box.

If you have short hair and find you throw away half the colour, get another bottle or brush and bowl and mix equals amounts of the dye and activator together, once hair dye is mixed you have to use it. Make sure you screw the lids back on the bottles of unused stuff properly as product will deteriorate if exposed to the air.
