what Riven says.

Also I've been reading 'Beauty and Misogyny' and there's rather a good phrase, that stuff like heels are designed to make women look 'different and deferent'.
Now I've got that in my head I don't look at women trip-tripping along in high heels and think 'ooh, empowered!' I think 'deferent'.

hence flats make women look more confident to me now, and hence more generally happy and attractive.

You've got to be prepared to lose things when you're wearing heels.

Buses, hats, children etc., because, to be honest, running in heels isn't an option.

Yours, happily and just as much a woman as ever, in flatties.

I only wear flat shoes even though I'm a measly 5 foot tall. This is because I ruptured tendons in my foot and ankle years ago it's too bloody painful for me to wear heels now.

I cannot read that, I just can't even click on the link, sorry.

FWIW I hate wearing flat shoes because I feel so short, small and unempowered. I am 5ft7, and have size 8 feet so am not really short but I feel it.

This applies to flat boots as well. I think it's because I spend nearly all the time in very chunky boots with about an inch or so heel, rather than being sleek and groomed and 'feminine' they are often men's boots as well so I feel kind of strong in them.

I dislike wearing heels, very uncomfortable and awkward. So 'daring' to wear flat shoes would be daring to feel unempowered, for me - it depends how you classify 'flat' though.

Sorry, that made little sense. I read the thread title in the way it applies to me, iyswim.

I hate flat shoes/boots

I hate heels

I feel Ok in men's boots, horse boots and work boots. Or very substantial women's boots with a good thick heel, but not a high heel - just thick all the way along.

I wear heels very, very rarely and as a result, do not know how to walk in them and want to cry after a couple of hours because my feet hurt so much.

I take my hat off to women that swan around in vertiginous heels but I just can't be arsed. Plus, heels make me as tall or taller than my dh and he doesn't like that!

ScaryFucker · 18/10/2010 14:28

I don't ever wear heels

I never have, and probably never will

Meggles76 · 18/10/2010 15:05

I am 5ft nothing - some days I wear heels and some days I wear flats. I feel (and think I look) equally lovely in both! DH would probably say he prefers heels - but he is 6ft 3 so there is a bit of a height difference with us!!!! However, DH also appreciates that heels are not practical when I am dashing to work and picking up DC.

Women should dress for themselves - not for men. Any man who is only intersted in the way you look is not worth having anyway!

DM is a hideous rag that no one should bother looking at
