What on earth does one wear to a christening?!

Stupidest question ever, I know. But I've only ever been to one christening (apart from as a child) and it was in the summer, so a pretty summer dress and a cardigan just in case was fine.

This one's in a week or so and is going to be freezing. So I need to be warm, glamorous, and appropriate.

I'm a broke student but I have a £50 topshop voucher, and lots of clothes. I'm 20 and a size 6. Help me? I don't know what people are meant to wear to a church!

Christenings tend to have a more informal dress code than weddings. As long as you don't wear denim and don't look like you are going clubbing you should be OK.

KristinaM · 16/10/2010 20:38

If it was a wedding, what woudlnyou wear from your extensive wardrobe?

Meggles76 · 16/10/2010 20:43

I went to a winter christening and wore a jersey dress, blazer opaques and heeled shoes.

KittyTwoShoes · 16/10/2010 20:47

I don't know. They are getting married next year but I'm their bridesmaid so I don't have to think about that! I've never known anyone who got married in the winter. I think I have a shortage of winter clothing... Pretty much everything is either too casual or too glam, there's nothing in between.

I have a black skirt, high waisted A-Line, which I could wear... black isn't frowned upon, is it, if I wear a colourful top?

Oh really Meggles? That sounds nice... Trouble is my only jersey dress is black, body con, and quite low cut. I love it though, and I could always pop on a pashmina so the top is a bit more covered up?

Black skirt sounds good

What tops and shoes or boots do you have?

Do you have a coat or jacket?

You don't Need to be really dressed up, just smart ish

KenDoddsDadsZombieDogsNotDead · 16/10/2010 21:16

Just dress nicely but nothing too titty or short for church. If it's cold do you have a nice coat you could put on over your outfit?

KittyTwoShoes · 16/10/2010 21:20

Tops... lots of differently coloured vests. this or in this colour maybe?

Shoes, I have some gold heels, black heels, white heels, black patent ballet pumps... purple ankle boots, or cowboy boots. Oh, and some black shoe boots that are really nice but rub.

I do have a couple of smart coats and jackets - I have a smart black trench coat, or a black coat with a furry collar, or a cropped navy jacket, or a red duffle coat. I have this jacket from Zara, too.

That blush colour is gorgeous.
I would think like most churches it will be cold so maybe a coat would be wise! Then you can wear something a bit more informal under it for the after do.

KittyTwoShoes · 16/10/2010 21:40

It'd be okay with a black skirt, do you think? I have some earrings that would go with it, actually, and the gold shoes... Do you think I'd have to wear a cardigan, or would the coat be alright?

black skirt and black coat with furry collar sounds nice and dressy. just dont wear with a black top (too funeral like) or white blouse ( too officey) - you need colour

gold shoes or purple ankle boots fine i think, if they are smart day wear and not too tarty. no to cowboy boots and white heels

otherwise black heels always smart

smart and ladylike is very on trend this season

and some funky jewellery or accessories so you dont look too boring Smile

A black skirt and a top like the blush one would be just perfect. I'd probably wear black flats and maybe a cardi over top. Christenings don't tend to be overly fancy and people will be wearing a huge range of things. I usually just wear a simple day dress and ballet flats.

KittyTwoShoes · 16/10/2010 22:25

Kristina, it's okay, I promise I wasn't seriously considering wearing the white heels or the cowboy boots for the christening! Just going through everything in my head because half my stuff's at home.

Super. Thanks everyone!
