I want to make more of an effort with my appearance because I think it will make me feel more confident. I don't have money to spend and don't really know anything about make-up etc.

Please share your tips for simple and affordable steps I can take to look and feel nice.

a good haircut, keep hair well groomed, nails neat and tidy, concealer to even out any red patches/spots/dark circles etc, mascara and a lip gloss (or even vaseline). Accessories can really help an outfit, even if it's just a scarf around your neck or a belt.
I'm sure others will help here, or do a search through old threads, there was one recently with loads of tips.

good luck :)

Do your hair everyday (a shine spray really helps give a polished look)

Try and make outfits from your wardrobe (drag out stuff you haven't worn for ages and wear it)

Clothes ironed, shoes polished.

Nails neat and tidy.

Try and make sure handbag and shoes match.

Some eyeliner/mascara and lip gloss or vaseline.

Thats all my tips im afraid!

sorry just realised ive repeated most of what miss melly has said!

I agree with the points above.

If you have just a little cash you could spend then I'd suggest a tinted moisturiser and something like a cream based blusher which you can also use on your lips. A mascara and vaseline will give your lips a lovely shine.

Thanks! Is there somewhere I could get a cheap or free make over? I don't really have a clue about make up. I don't want to wear a lot but a little bit would be nice.

Probably an intimidating department store!

Try youtube, they have video tips on how to put on make up, or just practise practise on yourself.

If you have any beauty colleges near you you could always put yourself forward as a model.

Body shop would give you a make over.

My 2-3 minute face for when I'm in a hurry, or don't want to look too made up.

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser (this is very very good but there are cheaper TMs on the market, I remember Vichy did one)

I have dark circles and use a corrector, plus a professional concealor (I think it's kryolan) palette as nothing consumer works, in my opinion (and my friend's opinion, who is a top top top makeup artist) If your dark circles aren't too bad you could get away with bobbi brown creamy concealer, or a light diffusing wand (Guerlain instant light, touche eclat, etc)

Check around your nose, if there's discoloration, brush a bit of concealer there and pat in.

colour in brows with a taupe shadow with angled brush. nothing unnatural, but it frames the face

tightline (basically lift up the top lid and apply dark eyeliner (gel or pencil) to the base of the lashes. Doesn't look like eyeliner, but lends bulk to lashes and makes you look groomed. Should also be done if applying eyeliner on top as it will get rid of gaps.

mascara. If you want a good but cheap one, try LashBlast, MaxFactor Masterpiece is good and it's a tenner.

Cream blush (which can also double as a lip stain) Stila convertible or Bobbi Brown cream pots are great and last forever.

Rimmel make good lipsticks and lipglosses and their kohl is fantastic.

Other from that my other basic routine is fairly down at home. I do curly girl for hair (using inecto) and cleanse with castor oil/

always moisturise with jojoba and an occlusive on top, face I use anything to hand.

I regularly have to dye my grey hairs (boo hoo) check you don't - instant frazzler

And other general grooming tips. New, proper underwear. Always. Can wear cheap clothing but don't wear nasty shoes. You can have decent hair and good shoes and the rest kind of follows.

I also would go against the grain and say avoid jeans (unless you are young, tall and skinny). They do not suit many women and there are trousers/dresses that look so much better.

Got my hair cut today for the first time since last december! I think Mac do make up lessons near me so might get one next month to help with that. Not worrying too much about clothes just yet as I am pregnant so don't fit into much. My nails are horrid though so need to think about that.

Lots of good advice above, I would also add that's so worth having your eyebrows regularly threaded as brows frame your face and make you look groomed and awake (if done properly). Plenty of small Asian salons offer this for £3-5, that and having your lashes dyed once a month(about £10) would save time and have good results.
Enjoy!
